If you pop 1 or more blue balls before first unity race, you can choose top option.
If you didn't pop any blue balls before first unity race, you pick middle.
The more blue balls you pop, the stronger your team.
By the time you reach Riko in the finals, you should've nuked more than 8 balls, ideally 10 or more, if you pop 7 or less you will lose 90% guaranteed.

Once you have chosen your path, only keep clicking the top option, however if you started with the top option, on the 4th race you will face the Turd Queens (sometimes a different team called Apex something) and you will most likely lose, so just choose middle option here, since it's the last race before Riko, don't gamble your run even if you think you can win.
