There is quite a fair number of Japanese horse racing fans who prefer their horses to never leave their island country in fear of death or injury of their favorite horses. This is because Japanese horse racing fans get really angry and sad over greedy horse owners who demand their championship horses to keep racing until they die instead of retiring them early for breeding.

For example, the top two most tragic female horse deaths in Japanese history are Hokuto Vega and Liberty Island. Both female horses had already won every possible domestic championship race in Japan, yet their selfish horse owners got too greedy for money, and sent the two poor horses off to die in foreign lands, without ever giving them the opportunity to become mother horses and therefore, permanently ending their bloodlines by leaving them as the final branches of their family trees. Due to quarantine reasons, Hokuto Vega and Liberty Island's bodies could not be brought back to Japan for proper burial, so Hokuto Vega is still buried in Dubai and Liberty Island had to be cremated in Hong Kong.
