>Charles Blakely (Corey Hawkins), an aimless young man descending from free Blacks, lives in a house built by his ancestors and passed down through generations. Newly unemployed and more interested in partying his days away than paying the bills, Charles soon runs into financial problems. In danger of losing his house, he is forced to accept an unusual proposal: Eccentric businessman Anniston Bennett (Willem Dafoe) has decided to sequester himself from the world in penance for his family's past association with slavery, and wishes to do so by locking himself up in Blakely's basement for the summer. Despite his uneasiness in becoming Bennett's jailor, Blakely begrudgingly accepts, and a twisted bond develops between the two that leads Blakely down a terrifying path that takes him to the heart of race, history and the root of all evil.
