Christians identify collectively as the living body of God, animated by the Spirit of God, with authority to use the name of God to justify what gives them eternal life.
This is not different from what Greeks believed regarding themselves being the collective embodiment of Olympian spirit, the living flesh of the Olympian gods.
Christianity was the proposition that all gods are of a same source, a God of gods, and that all who are must unite as a singular body for their salvation from destruction.
It is more like greek than Jewish, but the roots of the idea long pre-dates both. In fact it is the attempted restitution of what you could call the origins of such a belief regarding God and people which are of God.
