Urawa Red Diamonds is the most popular club. Located in Saitama, it's the most successful club internationally and in domestic cups, but falls behind on league titles. It's also the only Japanese club present in this year's CWC.
Kashima Antlers is the second most popular club. Located in Ibaraki, it's jointly with Hiroshima Sanfrecce the most successful club in league titles, and also has one AFC CL title. Together with Yokohama F. Marinos, they're the only 2 clubs to have never been relegated to J2.
Kawasaki Frontale is the third most popular club in the country, but had never won anything and had developed a reputation as huge chokers. However, they finally lost their league virginity in 2017 and have become decently successful since.
Yokohama F. Marinos as mentioned is one of the last two clubs to have never been relegated, but it seems this is coming to an end this season, as they're dead last halfway through. They're the second most successful club in the Emperor's cup, after Urawa.
Tokyo Verdy used to go by Verdy Kawasaki and was perhaps the most successful club in the greater Tokyo area, but it struggled with lack of support as the Kawasaki population mostly supports Frontale instead, so they moved to the suburbs within Tokyo proper and renamed. Moreover its owner (Yomiuri newspaper) faced financial struggles and pulled funding, so it entered a period of crisis and relegation. It came back to J1 recently and is currently a mid-table team.
Sanfrecce Hiroshima is tied in league titles with Kashima Antlers as mentioned. They also have a reputation of being really clumsy. They broke the original J league trophy (which was made of glass), and in one occasion they forgot the team's t-shirts, so they had to literally borrow replica t-shirts from fans to play lmao.
Gamba Osaka is the biggest club in Kansai. They will forever remind you of the time the scored 3 goals against peak ManUtd in '08 (Ronaldo was playing). They lost that match by the way.
