My proposal

72-game regular season.
32 teams (Las Vegas and Seattle). No divisions, no conferences. Each team plays the other teams twice (one home, one away) to get to 62 games.

Each team has one designated rival that they play two more times. This is after the All-Star Break and is called "Rivals Week", and is meant to be a fun, familiar way to get back after the break. These are like college football has annual "bowl games". Every year, after the break, teams have these games, one home, one away, the travel is light, and it becomes an annual tradition for those fanbases. Rivals are:

>Golden State-Sacramento (I-80 Rivalry)
>LA Clippers-LA Lakers (Battle of LA)
>Miami-Orlando (Florida rivalry/theme)
>Boston-Philadelphia (Northeast theme)

>Utah-Denver
>Washington-Toronto (US vs Canada)
>San Antonio-Houston
>New Orleans-Memphis
>Charlotte-Atlanta
>Cleveland-Detroit

Each team plays their recent playoff opponents twice (one home, one away) if they had any. So OKC will play Memphis 4 times, Denver 4 times, Minnesota 4 times, and Indiana 4 times. But a team like Utah won't have any previous playoff opponents, which leads me how the remaining games are.

The remaining games are just your closest geographic opponents. So for Miami, they'd play the 62, and also their 5 more opponents would be Orlando (annual rival), Cleveland (playoffs), and then their closest cities: Atlanta, Charlotte, and New Orleans. That makes 72 games. If Miami made the 2nd round, then the extra New Orleans games would've been dropped, and it would be their playoff opponent.

Using this framework, I could even generate permutations of next season's schedule (assuming Las Vegas and Seattle are already in the league and they missed the playoffs).

The real life schedule makers work all summer, calling the arenas, getting concert dates lined up, accounting for the San Antonio rodeo every February, etc. and using computer programs (and now AI) to generate schedules.
