Gridiron Football obviously comes from Rugby which was transmitted to the USA via Canada, but I would argue it didn't really become American Football until the 1880's rule changes by American universities.

Canada has the best national team
The NHL used to be Canadian, but they invited American teams - and now the league is thoroughly American in any meaningful way, despite Canadians still liking the sport the most. Profits, markets, owners, winners - it is about the US. And the resulting shift - which is irreversible - has halved the share of Canadian players and doubled the share of American players since 1985. That development still isn’t finished. Canadians still outnumber Americans, but there is a reason to assume Americana will eventually be more numerous. Considering how close the US and Canada already seemed to be at the Four Nations, the US might be the superior team in 20 years
