Sometimes I think about the speeches I’d make or the match I’d put in on a Lions tour as captain. I’d encourage those on their first tour and rely on those with more experience to show leadership and get them through it. Be known as a great bloke around the camp. First to shake hands with the opposition after the test and first round in the bar that night. First in a scrap and all, but no hard feelings. Regardless of the outcome, a proper rock and a top player respectful of the tradition but always looking forward to the next match. A sort of Martin Johnson figure but maybe more humorous and less psychotic

I am 35 years old and I play old boys rugby at a club with outdoor toilets. Sometimes I sit in my garage and reminisce about the peak of my career, which was playing for a decent university side and turning out for a National League 1 outfit which gave me a good chunk of a season and a handshake

University was about as good as it got. I shared a house with a future England international. I won’t name him (he’s a good bloke) but he used to dress up as Buzz Lightyear and shag black birds. Some excellent schoolboy and university “tours” were had in Wales and Australia. Proper stuff, good rugby and decent time. I wish I could have gone to South Africa but it never happened and everyone I know that’s toured or played there rated it big time. We had one lad who was the son of a top player who just couldn’t play (he was even worse than me) and yet he had all the fundamentals. Big, fit, huge lifts in the gym, good vision, smart, alcohol abuser. Couldn’t carry a ball to save his life. Just couldn’t do it and every single time he’d get it he would fluff it in ways you couldn’t imagine. Like watching women’s rugby without the encouragement. He was so bad. After one victory he completely lost the plot and trashed the hire bus. Assaulted the driver who ended up biting him. Chinned the coach, threatened me with a bit of wood he ripped out of the coach seat for taking the piss out of his many drops and got arrested. His dad, who was on the staff of a Heineken cup winning side at the time, had to bail him out of prison and pay for the repairs.
