In TREETOPS also not unsung, where stood
Avian kin on th’ pterrible MOUNTAIN, built
By that uxorious WIND, whose heart though large,
Beguil’d by fair XANTHOUS PLANETESS, fell
To Compounds wet.
RODENT came next behind,
Whose annual sprawl in GRASSY PLAINS after
The JUNGLE cold-bloods lament their own fate
In mass extinction all a Summers day,
While smooth SERPENTINE from his native Rock
Slither’d back to the Sea, suppos’d with blood
Of RODENT yearly spreading: the Growth-tale
Infected AVIAN daughters with like heat,
Whose survival instincts in the sacred Perch
TYRANNO saw, when by the Feathers led
His eye survay’d the dark Evolution
Of wingèd PTERODACTYL.
Next came one
Who crow’d in earnest, when the Climate Change
Maim’d his brute Image, unused arms lopt off
In his own Placenta, within yolked egg,
Where he sized down, and sham’d his Ancestors:
BIRD his Name, Sky Monster, upward flying
And downward Feeds: yet had his Nestle high
Rear’d in TREE BRANCHES, dreaded through the Webs
Of ARACHNIDS, in MOUNDS and ROTTING LOGS,
And INSECT HIVES and WORM-HILLS frontier bounds.
Him follow’d LIZARD, whose delightful Seat
Was fair ARID SANDS, on the sunny Rocks
Of DESERT and OASIS, lucid streams.
He also against the house of REX was shrunk:
A Tyrant once he lost and gain’d a Niche,
SNAKE his limbless Conquerour, whom he hide from
In the crags to disparage and starve-out
For one of SCAVENGER mode, whereon to earn
His odious suppers, and adore the BUGS
Whom he had vanquisht.
