It didn't exist before them either. Sometimes it would align but more often than not the ballon d'or winner would not have won neither UCL nor any summer tournament.

as an american we are conditioned to not like soccer since its "worse" than american football or baseball, i personally dont like either that much and i followed the 2023 season of the MLB to see the texas rangers win where i then went to the world series parade. but cricket is faster as well as soccer and i actually watched my first match of soccer with it being a USL game with it being hartford vs loudoun being a 3-0 blowout. from what i gathered, it seems that soccer is more based on consistency since it is a bunch of guys running around for and hour and a half with little stoppage so it is something if youre able to have those moments where you "show out" but if thats all you attempt youll lose steam and eventually the other team will pull it over you and that being able to play at the highest of your ability for the whole time youre out there plus being able to do those big moments is what is valued most in soccer
