Botafogo rowing club and football club merged into one in 1942 and they adopted that badge. It uses the shape of the football club badge and the lone star that adorned the rowing club badge.
The rowing club was founded in 1894 and the rowers would hit the waters of the Botafogo cove in the earliest hours of the day when there was only one star left in the sky, which wasnt even a star, it was Venus.
In 1904 the football club was founded by some 15 year old kids passing notes in an Algebra class.
In 1942 during a basketball match between the Botafogo Rowing and the Botafogo Football teams one of the players died suddenly and in the aftermath of the tragedy came the merger of the two clubs.
One of the nicknames of Botafogo is "the lone star" and it is mentioned in our anthem.
While plastic teams are constantly changing their badge, ours is roughly the same for 83 years. Its a timeless design, its soulfull.

I like the South American badges. They aren't actually minimalist as already alleged, they're decades old and are cheap undercomplicated designs designed to function, not attract.
