The Brasileirão has been miles ahead the rest of the continent for many years now. All Copa Libertadores winners since 2019 were Brazilians, and with the exception of the 2019 final (Flamengo v River) and the 2023 final (Fluminense v Boca), all the other finals in that period were played between Brazilians. The disparity is brutal. Because of the ranking qualifying system, Racing and Vélez, who are the truly strongest teams in Argentina at the moment, didn't make it to the CWC. So not only Argentinian club football can't compare to its Brazilian counterpart at the moment, but they aren't even sending their best.

Just to give you an idea of the financial disparity, Vélez Sarsfield won the Argentinian league last year and were awarded the pitiful sum of half a million dollars. Marginally less than Santos, the second division winners in Brazil got. The prize the 16th placed club in the Brasileirão got, that is, the first club out of the relegation zone, was more than 2.5mi USD. Braziluans get paid more than 5x for not getting relegated than Argentinians do for winning their league.

All that River needs to do is to score at least once and then avoid defeat.
Inter advances first place with any draw, so unless they're losing or unless Lautaro personally hates River, they'll probably take it relatively easy on the attack.
If River can force a 1-1 draw, they're almost guaranteed in.
If they can force a 2-2 draw, they're guaranteed in.
I say this because I'm already sceptical that Monterrey can win against Urawa, but even if they do, I'm extremely sceptical that they can put 3 goals on them.

>Where is argentina?
Back in the 90s and early 00s.

Everything turned to shit.
People blame AFA and their ungodly competition formats, but it's mostly just years of players fleeing the country because of the daily six gorillion percent inflation. We unironically built a sort of cultural thing where if you manage to get the fuck out of the country it means you achieved success in life, so families push their children to leave by any means necessary; and football is a really good way of doing that.

Another thing is, making it to a first division's A-team is hard, so if a family is particularly poor (which kept becoming more and more common), whenever someone helps their child try to make it as a footballer, it usually takes a lot of sacrifice, and a sort of expectation is created where the successful child in question is essentially in charge of uplifting the whole family (which, if you know the stereotype of poor people having like a million children, means a footballer's salary paid in argentinian monopoly money is not going to be enough for a truly comfortable life for everyone).

Look into the life of most argie players in or outside the country, and you'll keep seeing the same sob story of "we grew up eating dust, dad worked as a [LiveLeak material-tier job], mom took me to football practice on her bicycle, which was [a continent's distance] away, she'd only have dinner once per year so me and my 20 tuberculosis-riddled siblings could eat instead". You'll probably get the gist of why they'd rather be anywhere than here (notice how many of the brazilian teams' star players are also argies).

TL;DR: Shit economy ---> lots of poor families ---> whoever's good enough to get called by someone on the outside will immediately bounce ---> only shit players left.

Monterrey can't attack. They basically parked the bus on both matches and scored on Inter through a free kick thanks to Ramos. They literally had 3 shots total in the entire game against River. River also had no (competent) strikers against them because their main guy got injured against Urawa.
Meanwhile Urawa defended their lead against an infinitely more competent Inter for like 70 min.
It literally depends on how much Urawa will be motivated to win, and I seriously doubt they'd like to leave empty handed.

>We unironically built a sort of cultural thing where if you manage to get the fuck out of the country it means you achieved success in life
I mean, that was reality for a long, long time. Even if Milei has a 10/10 presidency, 4 years aren't enough to fix a country that normalized a lot of shit it shouldn't have. Beyond just economy. We still have people saying "Cristina robaba, pero hacía"
We still normalize "siga, siga" in schools, letting kids get past early grades even if they can't read, we let teachers get so powerless that they can't even yell at kids to tell them to shut the fuck up. Oh, and plenty of parents get mad when schools dare to discipline little shits.
So, we ended up in a situation where not only is our economy FUCKED, we're also not actually teaching kids shit in school. Unless you take them to private schools.
And then if they dare to go to college, they're fucked because in many cases, they're finally challenged for the first time in their lives.

All of this is bad enough without the bullying, hazing, drugs + alcohol, the sexual abuse at graduation trips, etc. - then throw in modern feminazi shit leading to false accusations + blatant lefty indoctrination. It's all fucked from the bottom to the top in Argentina. I'll tie this to sports in a bit.

So, let's say you're a young Argentine player, raised in this SHITTY educational system. You manage to get into a top tier team and you're kinda breaking out. Because you're likely not well educated, you're going to be more prone to bad decisions. You get an offer from Russia...okay, it's in europe, you take it! Fuck it, your club needs the transfer money anyways. The wage is nice now, sure, but uh-oh, you're not actually breaking out in Russia...And you signed a long ass contract, so you're stuck in a team that may not even like you, and thus, you end up getting loaned all over the place.
You got your money, but your career is sinking now. Whoops!

Gaich wasn't exactly poor, but San Lorenzo's finances have been shaky...
anyways, the bigger point is that a smarter player or a better assessed player (agents play a role here) would have waited longer, maybe gone to Mexico for the meme run, or Portugal with hopes to springboard to a bigger league.

At the end of the day, River will need to score one more goal if they want to win.
The could do that by kicking a ball that the keeper couldn't catch, ideally during a game action but a setpiece might also work, even a penalty kick.
