They need teams in Portland and Boston, they could use a team in Philadelphia.
They have a league where their most popular player is in fucking Indiana, probably their smallest market.
Women's basketball doesn't know and has never known how to advertise itself. It tries to do "we're real basketball" and "we're tough too" but occasionally it has also done shaming, I remember a Liberty shirt from a few years ago I saw in a vintage store that had a scornful Statue of Liberty with the line "SHOW UP!" underneath.
So none of the advertising has really clicked for key demographics (I live close enough to Barclay's Center that I see their crowds often enough)
The people who watch these games are Middle-Aged women disproportionately Slavic and black racially but not by much a lot of Lesbians, the type who like a good Irish Bar, pretty much every Irish Bar in Park Slope and the north end of Fort Greene flies a Liberty Flag and becomes a Lesbian bar.
The big one though is girl-dominated families of 4-6. And frankly their advertising is terrible for that group. Russian girls and Middle Class black girls will put up to an extent with the SHOW UP and "We're tough af" ads, but when you're a dad and mom with 3 girls between 6-12 and you want to take them to a basketball game, you don't want it to sound like it's gonna be a violent lesbian roadhouse.

Women's sports are aimed at a male audience. They'd be way more successful if they actually aimed it at women. For example, Boston got a new NWSL team, and the entire marketing was centered around men's sports. Memes about men's sports, official launch was talking about Boston men's sports, male sports, male celebrities. It was unreal. It's like they don't know the only people watching the NWSL are women. I went to a Gotham game and the audience was 80+% women. It was Taylor Swift concert levels. But they keep ignoring their female audience so women don't feel like sports are for them.

You can start marketing a new women's soccer team to women by not exclusively talking about Tom Brady, men's American football, and men in sports the entire launch. Unrivaled was a great example of marketing at women.

Google is telling me that average attendance is less than 9k.
Also I just don't believe 80% were women out of a 15k crowd. Women almost always go to sports events with their partners, not due to the love they have for the game/competition.

You're getting off topic. We weren't talking about who is famous. They can bring in all the male athletes they want. This further pushes aside women and forces the idea that even women's sports are for a male audience.
>You said what not to do, not what to do.
If they simply stopped centering men and went neutral, it would be 100x better. There are ways to appeal more to women like showing players' personalities and changing your language on social media to make it more peppy. But the fact they won't even go neutral, and they specifically go out of their way to make it about men and men's sports, is the major problem. It's more about what they should stop doing.

It's not off-topic, the topic is how to market women's sports to women. Women are generally not interested in the stats or the competitive side of sports, so IMO the only way to do it is to bring in tons of drama or increase the social aspects of coming to the stadium eg. having various social events, meetups etc.

I highly doubt bringing in some random female player to talk about how Kayla Berbrynsky from United Inter City FC had the highest pass rating in the league will result in an increased interest from women.

Bringing in male athletes is not going to help women see that this is for women no matter how famous he is. It has the opposite effect. Bring in a female celebrity then. And promote it more. Angel City brought in Renee Rapp last year and they had one post and maybe an instagram story about it. It would have helped if they actually made a big deal out of it but the social media team sucks.

Never. Don't quote me on this but WNBA costs like $10M per NBA team or something in that ballpark. That's with most costs being subsidized as teams wouldn't be able to keep the lights on if they had to rely on their own revenue. This is why all these talk about salary gap is ridiculous. NBA players who make the literal league minimum actually earn their money while the top paid WNBA stars with their $200-250k salary are still net negative in almost all cases. (If it wasn't for Caitlin Clark I could have safely excluded he "almost" part.) As with many, many such cases the product is a major failure from business POV that they want to meme into reality as virtue signalling is a national sport around those parts.

I'm not against the existence of WNBA as a legit career option for female ballers but the dishonesty and pretense shrouding it is sickening. It is what it is at this point (see pic rel - you won't have trouble figuring out who's who in the scenario), if it wasn't for NBA's great financial success or the social (over)sensitivity of the question the owners would have plugged the plug 10 years ago at least. Fuck, I'm even okay with the League keeping them afloat in a cost-controlled way. Just always remember whatever you're getting is basically charity from those who actually earn that money. You want to make more? Seek out better options internationally or make your own league. You're still an entertainment product and not entitled to shit.

I could be wrong, but I think volleyball has somewhat decent percentage of female audience.

You don't take into calculation that the costs aren't real. All "charity" is written off from taxes, and all venues, venue staff, broadcasting, and logistics are already paid for, and otherwise would be idle, basicly renting their own venue and services back with the "charity" money as a form of tax evasion. Giving away x amount as charity, means x less tax needed to be paid, they use that x to rent things from themself, via trickery, and they get back x with only fraction of it taxed, with some new revenue generated. Add to this rigging games, to do gambling fraud, that they can get away with via registering the league as "sports entertainment".
