They have a league where their most popular player is in fucking Indiana, probably their smallest market.
Women's basketball doesn't know and has never known how to advertise itself. It tries to do "we're real basketball" and "we're tough too" but occasionally it has also done shaming, I remember a Liberty shirt from a few years ago I saw in a vintage store that had a scornful Statue of Liberty with the line "SHOW UP!" underneath.
So none of the advertising has really clicked for key demographics (I live close enough to Barclay's Center that I see their crowds often enough)
The people who watch these games are Middle-Aged women disproportionately Slavic and black racially but not by much a lot of Lesbians, the type who like a good Irish Bar, pretty much every Irish Bar in Park Slope and the north end of Fort Greene flies a Liberty Flag and becomes a Lesbian bar.
The big one though is girl-dominated families of 4-6. And frankly their advertising is terrible for that group. Russian girls and Middle Class black girls will put up to an extent with the SHOW UP and "We're tough af" ads, but when you're a dad and mom with 3 girls between 6-12 and you want to take them to a basketball game, you don't want it to sound like it's gonna be a violent lesbian roadhouse.
