What is the most impressive athletic combination?
I think it is distance running + strength. You need to be able run efficiently to flank your enemy at long distances, and then you beat him with strength once you're inside attack range. Shaving off fractions in 100m or 200m has little applicability by comparison.

This really makes me question everything I assumed about athleticism. The NFL athletes, for instance, aren't really trained or selected for this. They are pure explosion, so either pure strength or just speed within the first 50m or so.

Then, in basketball, it's all short area quickness and jumping ability (which has zero applicability to combat).

It's funny how we look at the athletes in some of these sports like football and basketball as elite physical specimens, but in practice, they don't have the advantage that we'd assume.

Of these contact sports, I think rugby is the most demanding and representative of general and applicable athleticism.

Hockey would be up there, but it's hard to translate skating to actual running ability, which is obviously more practical.

This is a very primitive view about warfare though. A quarterback would be much more useful in that situation.

Projectile skill would definitely trump fighting strength and even to an extent movement speed, but I think whether we're talking archery or guns, there is really no close analogue in sports. Simply throwing a football doesn't make you a better shooter, even though we could draw some aesthetic comparison. I'd argue that a baseball player is the greatest master of projectiles and equipment. The best QBs played baseball, where they refined their throwing mechanics. The best hitters have the best eyesight and anticipation. So, if we want to go all the way in on finesse without talking about physicality (which wasn't really the point of the post), then I'm taking a baseball player.

Probably my national bias, but I've always thought cross country skiing is the most underrated mix of the two.
Hard to find comprehensive lists, but out of the top 10 VOMax ever recorded, at least 3 are XC skiers, which is huge considering it's a sport done by about 5 million people worldwide while something like running is around 2 billion people. So the endurance requirements are insane.
Simultaneously you need full-body strength with a huge amount of core especially. Pic related is the current best skier in the world and doesn't exactly look like your typical cyclist or runner.

I agree. These top Hyrox guys running 2:30 for a marathon and 32 min for 10k while weighing close to 200lbs and still lifting heavy.

Darts and ice hockey. Anyone who mastered these two disciplines would be able to precisely throw darts into their enemies weak spots (one in each eye, one in the penis), before quickly escaping on skates faster than any simple runner could catch them.

What about archery and shooting? They seems like pretty close analogues.

Ultimately though, I feel endurance sports are stupid. As a parent, you should be pushing your child to do sports that earn the most money and recognition.

I will give cross country skiing, swimming, and biking some credit. They are all alternative ways of getting around, and depending on environment, may be much more efficient than walking/running.

What enemy you fucking autist? Do you think these are prehistoric times?
If you live a life where there's the need to street-fight on a regular basis, then first of all you're retarded, and second, just buy a gun at that point
Athleticism and strength are valuable attributes, but don't frame it as if you're an honorable warrior looking to efficiently dispose of your rivals, because you're not. You're an average joe on a chinese cartoon website

The decathlon is the king. Speed, strength, stamina, and skill. To be an elite decathlete, you need to be very good at everything and ridiculously good at at least one thing. Makes you wonder what the absolute performance limit at this is. It could of course be more purely physical, the technical aspects are crucial … but overall, I think it is fair to say that decathletes are the most complete athletes

The peak of individual athletic achievement is going to be an ensemble of events in any form. Decathlon, pentathlon, heptathlon. I wish there was a martial arts tournament style where guys had to compete in multiple events, like pure grappling, pure striking (maybe with helmets so they can have multiple fights in a weekend), and even shooting and room clearing. Would be pretty kino to watch and participate in locally. They could add a few crossfit style events on top of it, or maybe an obstacle course.

My realization was that americans have a massive bias towards a type of athleticism that is impractical, which makes pro sports feel like stolen valor.

I dont know why you are posting whites as examples.

Arguably the weakest race by far.
There is a reason why sports in usa are 95% 5% dominicans/mexicans.

White americans are weak.
And modern european are getting replaced by nafris and blacks.

Nordics? Pff they can't Even control somalians.

I posted the gold medalist in the most recent Olympic decathlon, the most dominant DL of the past decade (sorry Aaron Donald) in the NFL, the fastest WR (highlighting the other extreme of football), the best rugby player in the world (Dupont), and one of the top basketball players that I feel best highlights the absurdity of basketball builds.

I did consider this as an element. For a team situation where these elements matter, I think it's rugby that comes out on top while also having the aforementioned endurance and strength. If you want _just_ teamwork and movement ability without the heavy contact, then for me it's soccer.
