They let Hoffman walk because they thought he was too expensive and brought in a bunch of journeymen and a reclamation project in Romano and it's worked about as well as you would expect. That's now how World Series contenders operate. I honestly think if Dombrowski had free reign the team would be much better but he's being handcuffed and anybody who replaces him is also going to be handcuffed.
