A few things :
1 : Bordeaux used to be the big club of the atlantic coast in here but mismanagement got them demoted all the way down
2 : the south-west is rugby territory and a lot of towns in here are not large enough to sustain two clubs in two sports (exceptions being Bordeaux and Toulouse although the TFC is nowhere near as successfull and Stade Toulousain in rugby. TFC is a yo-yo club between Ligue 1 and 2, the Stade is one of the best rugby teams in Europe)
3 : a lot of that area is empty, the least populated districts are all in here.
4 : you actually have quite a few Ligue 2 clubs in that area (Annecy, Rodez, Pau, Clermont although they've just been relegated from Ligue 2 and the city is similar to Toulouse when it comes to rugby)
5 : Lyon and Saint-Etienne are both missing. Saint-Etienne got relegated because mismanagement of the club got them in a really bad spot for a while, and Lyon is in a whole financial mess of its own. Both are among the biggest historical clubs in the country.

here's what it looks like when you overlay with the Ligue 2 clubs (in orange) plus Lyon and Bordeaux.
Green squares are on the districts with fewer than 250k inhabitants. They trace the area of the "empty diagonal" and most of it fits exactly in your area.

Drought is still a significant factor, although it was worse 3-4 years ago. Still we are in the midst of an ongoing drought. Grain harvest should be good this year; however, it will depend on rainfall in the coming weeks. The high temperatures were generally positive for insect fertilisation of fruits, so fruit harvest should be good too. Generally a lot of regional differences as it pertains to pests, however.

I went to Toulouse and it was quite nice really.

Then I went to Montpellier and Sรจte and it was absolutely lovely 10/10 the missus loved it.

Then we did Narbonne and Carcassonne, again very nice. I had a pizza with duck breast on it and a lovely bottle of Malbec.

Everyone was really friendly too, I speak a little French and it was fine.

Also the french basque countries are less populated than the spanish parts. Bayonne is the most populated town in the french basque countries. It's not even mid-sized on the scale of french cities and it already has an overperforming rugby club relative to the size of the city.
Bayonne has 50k inhabitants.
Bilbao is seven times larger.

The true mystery is : WHY do the Loire Countries suck so much at all sports ?
>Tours
>Le Mans
>Orlรฉans
>Blois
>Poitiers
They all absolutely blow in all sports. Best in there is Tours Volley Ball who IIRC are the master chokers of the league. Only city that's vaguely okay in the general area is Angers with SCO being able to float in Ligue 1 (might be turning into a yoyo club though) and some ice hockey chokers. Or Nantes but they will gladly tell you they're actually bretons.
It's not an empty area, it's not poor, there's some infrastructure, potential local athletes aren't directed towards winter sports or sailing and yet it's a complete sporting black hole.

The southern "part" of France (Occitania) is litterally a whole different country that had been subjected to french colonization since the 13th century
They used to only have football as their upper siced compared to the north. But with PSG and othe multiple northen teams getting foreign bucks even in footy the north is superior now

Myopic take, most of the norther teams had their peaks in the 60s and 70s long before there was any money in french football.
If anything, the south may currently be at its best with Monaco constantly being in the top 3, Nice doing generally well and >OM

Pretty much when the french football was almost amateur-tier, given the ancient gaulish dislike fo everything "anglo" that only started to go away with the rise of the italian-origin players like Platini

Still, Occitania should be it's own country and i will never stop seethe for this

The greater Buenos Aires area alone makes up like a quarter of the country's entire population, so it only makes sense.
The south is empty. The north is not, but most people just stick to cheering for Boca/River and MAYBE one local team.

The only other places with a diverse football culture are Santa Fรฉ and Cรณrdoba, so they have a few teams with a lot of support, but that's about it.
