rusbro is right in that OBS studio is perhaps needlessly complicated but if you're a nerd like me you can have hours of fun trying to tweak the settings to get the best output and workflow, taking into account 4chan's silly 4MB webm limit

these settings get me around 15 seconds of output before 4MB is exceeded. There's certainly room for further optimization and I'm by no means an expert. I have a script that scrubs the audio using FFMPEG (the OBS studio devs are autistic and refuse to allow output with no audio). I can get longer recordings but I'd have to turn down the quality/resolution/frame rate.

its not at all trivial to get a good quality webm/mp4, especially when you're watching a live recording and you can't rewind much (there are browser extensions that allow you to rewind ~1 minute)

your idea of recording everything would work but then you'd have to make the webms after the event, whereas I prefer to do it live. it definitely has some advantages though so i say go for it!
