The path for success in pro sports in the last 20 years or so has basically made it impossible for any guy like that to exist.
Now you're basically swept up when you're 14-16 thrown into one of about 10 Elite Academy schools on a scholarship, turned into a nerd, sent to college and propped into an NBA full of like-minded people.
Even when Lebron was coming around and there was a bit of a Private School Industrial Complex that existed, there were still enough Private Schools that kids weren't relocating to a boarding school.

Actually that does happen more often then you think. You hit the other side of 30 and lose that half step of burst and its over. For a guy like him who was never that big of a jump shooter when he couldn't speed past people anymore there wasn't much to do. A name that it reminds me of is Luol Deng. While obviously not at Iversons level he was an all-star level starter who as soon as he hit 30 the minutes caught up to him and was essentially done at 31 as an effective player.
