When he first won the only “oil” clubs were Chelsea and maybe madrid
Literally everyone could win and it was more balanced
He had a really good Portugal generation playing for Porto

the weakest team he faced in the knockouts what the worst sir alex manure
lyon were in the middle of a 7peat, super depor were in their greatest ever era and beat the holders milan, and monaco, despite not having much to their name beat real and a chelsea on the rise
no one has an easy route to a european title, he beat great teams of their time

He has a hard time disciplining Zoomers and team owners don't want the kind of controversy he brings.
He got fired from Roma because the owners were mad that he was too harsh on the ref of the Europa League final.
So, they expected a very tough run of teams right before a very easy run of teams to fire him.

Lyon was famous for buck breaking Real Madrid in that era. It was a legit great team.

True

Porto was the favourite in the semis. For starters, it had won the UEFA Cup the year before and it was the only of the other teams to.have to won the Europeam cup before.

Coruna and Monaco were also respected because they had won leagues recently. Chelsea were the true underdogs. The money wasn't yet truly running and they had not won the league before, most people outside the UK did not know they even existed before the CWC win

All of those teams had players that later on moved to traditionally big clubs and became elite
Lyon had the likes of Malouda, Diarra, Juninho and Essien
Monaco had Evra, Giuly, Adebayor

only one of them saw his career plummet into nothingness despite managing some of the richest teams. mourinho was just a regular manager who overachieved, as soon as a real nigga with talent like Ancelotti showed up he started winning trophies with madrid and shitting all over his legacy

I remember that year. Coruña was very good, could won it all. Lyon wasnt as rated but as far as pre-psg French teams go, it was strong too.
But Monaco was the biggest surprise, nobody expected them lets be honest. Chelsea wasnt as respected back then but still felt as favorites in that semifinals.
The team that was the most rated among all of the 32 among that group stage, was Arsenal

Mourinho would never coach Porto in his prime though. He was starting his career in a big team of his country. Guardiola is Spanish, different context

lol no, he had a bunch of nobodies. they were either veterans who weren't good enough to play in stronger leagues or just decent up and coming portuguese league level players, most of whom didn't do anything in their careers after that.

the draw opened up for him, yes, but even those teams they faced were 2-3 times richer than porto. At that time, it was considered impossible for a team outside of the major 4 (5) leagues to reach a cl final. all the top players had been moving to those leagues for 10 years by that time, and only clubs from those leagues would make even the semis. even winning the uefa cup a year before was a huge surprise.

Not completely disagreeing with you, but it was a different era, and i dont mean football but of the information as a whole. Sesko and Gyokeres in that time would be "nobodies" outside their club countries but nowadays even someone in Somalia knows them. Porto had legit elite players like Deco, Paulo Ferreira, Ricardo Carvalho, and a decent midfield in Maniche and a decent striker in Benni Mccarthy.
Anonymous Croatia No.149487298
>>149486941
deco and carvalho are the only players from that team who had an elite career, and they were also nobodies before playing for mourinho at porto. and they weren't even young at that point. they were struggling to establish themselves. players like maniche and ferreira had very modest careers before and after those couple of years at porto.

He played antifootball which is often the best tactic if you want to win. The leagues conspired against him to prevent other top managers from employing this boring, unprofitable style of play.
