The explanation lies in simple geometry. Not only is the net around six inches higher at its edges than it is in the centre, but you lose roughly four-and-a-half feet of court space by playing in a straight line as opposed to the safer diagonal route. The error margins shrink dramatically.
These are the disadvantages. But the good news is that opponents naturally expect cross-court balls, so they can be caught out by the down-the-line finishing thrust, especially when it comes at 80mph. Look out for Raducanu ending points this way against Mimi Xi, the 17-year-old British wildcard she has been drawn to face on Monday.

Another old coaching saw states that the player who hits more running backhands is likely to lose any given match.
The running backhand is generally seen as the hardest shot in the game. A classic point construction will work a player wide to their forehand side, before making them dash across the baseline in the other direction. If they can hit a passing shot off their backhand wing while at a dead run, good luck to them.
But there is another option for the defender. Finding themselves out of position, they can buy time with a backhand slice. When carved with optimal technique, the ball will scud low over the net and stay even lower after bouncing. But it also travels more slowly through the air than a double-handed drive, which gives them time to arrest their sprint – always a challenge on slippery grass courts – turn around and recover towards the centre of the court.
Raducanu has hugely improved her backhand slice in the last season or two, turning it into a strength of her game. Some consider the shot to be old-fashioned, a relic of the wooden-racket era, but this only works to her advantage because it is rare to find a player on the WTA Tour with a really strong slice.
Ashleigh Barty was one such, and would surely have won more than a single Wimbledon title but for her early retirement in 2022. Tatjana Maria, who recently won Queen’s first women’s tournament for 52 years, is even more unusual in that she slices off the forehand side as well.
The trick is to generate a lot of backspin by really knifing your strings into the ball. This makes it behave differently on contact with your opponent’s racket, and often disrupts their rhythm. Raducanu’s improved ability to get out of trouble with her slice has helped her to level up her success rate on the running backhand so that she now wins half these points rather than one in three.

From the very beginning of Raducanu’s career, her ability to ram her opponent’s serves back at them has always been her strongest suit. All the way back in 2021, her present coach Petchey was already saying that “her return of serve is one of the best, very like Victoria Azarenka” – who won back-to-back Australian Opens just over a decade ago.
But in recent matches, Raducanu has continued to work on this strength. The percentage of second-serve returns she puts in court has always stood at around 80 on the backhand side, but she has recently lifted the forehand score from the mid-60s to match that figure.
With an unparalleled ability to drive the ball deep on those returns, Raducanu can be an intimidating player to serve to. Should she find her best form at Wimbledon, expect to see a few double-faults from psyched-out opponents.
