I worked at a grocery store for 7 years through highschool and college: started as a bagger/cashier, then trained in grocery, produce, and deli. If we had call-outs in grocery and couldn't get a grocery clerk to come in we would pull someone from customer service (cashier/bagger) or produce to stock shelves. And since it was presumably an evening shift (most dates are in the evening and you were scheduled to avoid a date) it was just a stocking shift which anyone in a grocery store who is even remotely competetent can do. If it's frozen/dairy you just wear a jacket since you stock from behind in the walk-in fridge/freezer. If it were a delivery shift that's another matter since you need to know how to use a pallet jack, unload a truck and organize backstock, that would need more grocery training but even I have walked cashiers/new grocery clerks training through it and they have it down in a day or 2. Managers also typically help unload on delivery. Those are usually the opening shift (4am) when delivery arrives but 2 or 3 times a week we may get one in the later afternoon if we've had a busy week. Every grocery chain will have different policies and procedure's on all of these aspects but the general principles are the same for all of them. Not trying to shit on your job but we've literally pulled people off the street to work grocery.
