well 40 years ago the point was that the team was full of local boys and you could have a pint with them after the game and that's worth more than winning some tinpot cup. Nowadays teams outside the top 8 literally don't matter at all, they're all owned by Arab/American billionaires and full of openly admitted mercenaries, plus they charge you $2000 a year for tickets or some BS like that
