I go to Melbourne about 3 weeks each year and I heard rumours that the Crown Melbourne poker room had gone downhill badly. I am in the middle of my trip an unfortunately all the rumours are true. The poker room in no longer in the downstairs Las Vegas area and is in level 1. They have got rid of the $1/$3 game and only have $2/$5 $300 to $1000 games or above. There is no games for the more social type player. I bought in for $300 and when I got to the table everyone had over $2,000 and pre flop was $30-$40 most hands. They have increased the rake to 10% up to $25 per every hand which is outrageous. Players that play a lot of hands are doomed paying that much rake. There is no big screen for watching sport like the other room had. There is a bar next to the poker room that plays very loud music. Poker does not have a place you can buy chips from, you have to all the way to the cashier on the main floor. Every table goes on a 15 minute break every three hours. The table I was on went on a 15 minute break after being at the table for only 5 minutes, it's a huge time waster as people are slow at coming back and some just leave. Basically the Crown Melbourne poker room as gone from the best in world about 10 years ago to probably the worst. They are getting away with it now because everyone is on holidays and people will always play during the Xmas holiday period, however the lack of lower buy in games and the outrageous rake is not sustainable in the long run and once the holidays are over.
