Scrap Nagoya Basho so everyone takes summer off and rests up. Speed up the timetable so all 6 grand tourneys are between September - end of May with a mini 1 month break over winter. Tourney's become 10 matches instead of 15 which reduced banzuke shenanigans and reduces impact of injury. Only 1 yokozuna allowed, and stop promoting Ozeki-tier kadoban chimps to Y because there's a power vacuum. Did JSA learn nothing from Kisenosato? And finally, let the people throw the zabuton you no-fun fucks.

No. Most of them have spent their entire adult lives in and around sumo stables, eating vast amounts of food every day. When they retire and stop training, a lot of them fail to stop eating. Dramatic transformations like that of the former Takakeisho are uncommon - maybe 25% of retirees. Most of them stay fat and die relatively young.

WMH beat Onosato in his zuna run back in March, so I'd only give Onosato a 70% chance of winning that one. WMH is such a weird fighter, he doesn't really seem to specialise in anything but gets wins by just being big and not bad.

I genuinely do not want to call Nephew v Dan. He doesn't have the size to do what Onosato did today, and Aonishiki is such a dogged technical fighter that I really wouldn't be surprised if Aonishiki found a way. height and strength are not things people get by random luck. height requires a lifetime of good nutritional habits and exercise starting from early childhood. a lot of the manlets out there ended up as shorties because instead of eating properly when they were children they chose to have power struggles with their mother and father to see if they could eat only candy and ice cream instead of healthy food. onosato didn't, he chose to do what was best for him instead.
DNA doesn't determine your height, it determines your potential. Takakeisho ended up shorter than his father because it was only later in life that he learned that you gotta eat big to get big.
People talk a lot about phenotype when discussing genetics, but the term "chemovar" rarely pops up. Chemovar refers to the specific expression of a DNA given specific outside inputs. Take two seeds from the same tree and grow one in perfect conditions (the Onosato tree) and you'll get a better result than the one that didn't get watered enough and was in partial shade (the Takakeisho tree).
Here is a pic of identical twins to illustrate the point, the both have the same genes, but its not hard to tell which one put more effort into leading a healthy life.

NHK's Aonishiki documentary is up

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/shows/3025221/

The highlight for me was seeing Meisei's chagrin at having snatched defeat from the jaws of victory followed by the slow-mo closeup replay of his display of frustration, but seeing stuff like the training footage was pretty good too. Really make you wonder if somewhere back down the line Meisei did something to get on the wrong side of NHK's documentarians.

The fight only gets more impressive the more you watch it. Hoshoryu actually looked kinda panicked once he realised that there's nothing he could do to get Dan off him. I think the reason he's so immune to being pushed down because he's actually so close to his opponent that they simply don't have the leverage to push down on him with any real force. You either keep him out the way Onosato and Daieisho have done it, or you're basically done for because he IS going to take out one of your legs eventually.

Hand placement, Tobi is constantly pawing at his opponent.
Mainly at his opponents hands and face, blocking their hands from going where they want. Combined with thrusts from a low angle to constantly destabalize his opponent.
Tobi's sumo's main goal is to break his opponents regular flow and not let them control the match.
Never underestimate the monkey, he retired Terunofuji after all.

Honestly, I believe the problem is that Dan's gameplan is so atypical that everyone is struggling to deal with it. He's so low that you can't really throw him, and all the while he's just fishing for your legs. Watch the webm again, you see his left hand going for Hosh's right knee to pull it out. He misses, goes back to the belt, then tries again and manages to yank his knee out from under him.

Right now Dan is looking like the best belt fighter in Ozumo and I'm not even the dickrider.
