I haven't seen any evidence of him stepping up a level yet. He's a one-trick pony at the moment because he's still so close to the beginning of his career, he's not yet learned how to think on his feet when the tachi-ai doesn't go to plan. We're still years away from peak Onosato.

I think he's improving noticeably every basho. The Oho match was pretty bad, I'll give you that, but he's looked extremely good otherwise. I also think he can grow even more.

I would love it if this basho came down to Onosato vs Takayasu again. Just look at this throw resistance.

I just think that Onosato has immense potential that he isn't yet living up to. He's already a fantastic rikishi and a cut above everyone else on the banzuke, and it's because of that I judge him more harshly than others. One day, we'll look back on these early bashos and marvel that Onosato was ever so green.

The makushita torikumi looks really good today. A lot of up-and-comers fighting today and matches that could let Ishizaki and Asahakuryu secure juryo promotions early into the basho.
Who are your favourite wrestlers in makushita right now?

Same, but I try my best to watch a few matches that feature wrestlers I like. I'm bummed out that Anosho is 0-3 but he's Ms8 so it's understandable. The other wrestlers I'm rooting for are generally doing well right now so I'm glad.

I was really hoping Mudoho would step up lol. I always feel bad for the guys with successful brothers (third waka bro way down in sandanme or something).

I like Ishizaki too but like Asakoryu I dont think the muscle manlet gameplan works too well in makuuchi.

Really I like the Sakaigawa beya fighters, like Kurohimeyama, Yonezawaryu, and Shimizuumi. I think all three are going to appear in the top division eventually.

I wasn't expecting much but 0-3 is not a very pretty start. I hope he can make a comeback by the end of the year.
>I always feel bad for the guys with successful brothers (third waka bro way down in sandanme or something).
He went kyujo for one basho after getting 1-6; it was some sort of spinal injury if I remember correctly. Message still doesn't change because it sucks to be only known for being a relative of someone who is successful while you're still in the trenches.
>Kurohimeyama, Yonezawaryu, and Shimizuumi
I imagine the makushita grind isn't going to be easy (it never is unless you are really talented) but I do imagine they'll become sekitori one day. I like Shimizuumi the most among the three and I watch their matches among others in makushita.

Well, if heโ€™s anything like his brother, every bit of forward progress will always be immediately followed by regression.

At least he isnโ€™t the lowest-ranked brother. Naya (formerly Houzan, who took Naya after Ouhou took his current shikona) has struggled to stay out of sandanme, and heโ€™s older than Ouhou.

The oldest Naya brother, Yukio, got out of sumo and became a professional wrestler with instead. (He was the only one old enough to really understand their parentsโ€™ ugly divorce so he wanted nothing to do with sumo after that.)
He would have been incredible on the dohyo, though. Heโ€™s like 200cm tall.

Funny enough, heโ€™s also the son closest to his father, since the other three canโ€™t really be too open about having a relationship with the guy who regularly trashes the JSA.

If he only misses one basho, heโ€™ll drop down to around J7 when he comes back, if he misses two basho, heโ€™ll have to start from Ms5 or so.

I havent seen any bicep tears in sumo before. I was a bit surprised but I guess Takkers, with his upper body centric sumo, tried to curl Sadanoumi out of the dohyo. And succeeded I suppose. Its sad, I like Takerufujis sumo a lot.

I find it's best to enjoy a wide selection of wrestlers and not get too attached to any particular one but some "people" like to obsess
You can watch highlights here from the current basho to catch up
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sumo/

it's also live right now, just search sumo on youtube and filter to live results
top division, which is all most people watch, will start around 2 hours from now and last around 3 hours
Lots of people enjoy watching the sumo stable youtube channels, we have a list of them in our /xs/ thread >>>/xs/236193 which is where we post when tournaments aren't happening

Shikihide got sick in 2020 and without a second coach, most of the daily operations of the stable was done by his wife. His wife was extremely oppressive, which led to most of the wrestlers running away from the stable in protest. One of the issues when she ran the stable was that rotten rice was being used to feed the wrestlers because all of the fresh rice, which is donated by Shikihide's supporters, was being used to feed supporters/visitors instead of the wrestlers.

Just got back from work and finished watching the matches I couldn't catch this morning. Onosato's style of sumo really is just him briskly walking forwards lmaoooo. Today was another great day of Ozumo.

>The lone Yokozuna winning convincingly again

>Kirishima's Ozeki run still alive (they'll probably give it to him on 32)

It's a shame WTK's Ozeki run just isn't happening. Hopefully he can get to at least 10 and keep his run alive for next basho. A MK would be devastating.

His size hasn't really increased all that much. He was 177kg on his debut at Ms10, and there are guys much heavier than Onosato in lower divisions. If you rewatch today's match you'll see that Onosato was intentionally parrying Bozo's left arm upwards. The second parry is when Onosato caught his arm well enough to really go in and exert force, at which point Bozo had no leverage to resist and got walked out.

You're seeing size AND technique at the same time.

He's currently at the highest maegashira rank, so promotion to komusubi is guaranteed with any winning record. Komusubi is the last rank where that applies, after that they have to either wait for a sekiwake slot to open, or get a very strong score of 11+ wins to force an extra sekiwake slot.

Oshoma is 100% losing his spot and Daieisho's 0-0-15 will slam him down miles, so there's gonna be a single Komusubi spot available out of the entire Sanyaku, and Dan is M1e with a good KK incoming. Abi and Tamawashi are ready to take the spot if Dan falters, but if the basho ended right now Dan would get the spot.

The reason extra Sekiwake spots open is because you need to be Sekiwake to jump to Ozeki. WTK was given Sekiwake because he can realistically get to 33 wins this basho and becomes Ozeki, thus he needs to be at Sekiwake. No result in September will make Dan Ozeki because you can't start a run at M9, so there's no need for Dan to be Sekiwake no matter what result he gets this basho. He can have Oshoma's Komusubi spot, then if he gets 10+ next basho can force open another Sekiwake spot, THEN he can shoot for Ozeki.

This is also why it takes 11+ wins to open an extra sekiwake spot. 33/3=11, so 11+ wins at komusubi means they're already on an ozeki run.

They've been consistent since pretty much forever: it will always take 11+ wins to open an overhang sekiwake, and 11+ wins will always do it. 10 is not enough if there isn't an open S1.

Yeah looking through examples of 8-10 wins, the only exceptions made were in cases of absences to at least one of the existing sekiwake. Public injury, covid, and suspension, they only made an exception in cases of "there would be an opening if it wasn't for this, so we're not going to punish the other guy who would have otherwise secured this position."

Dan will have to finish substantially better than Takayasu to get any sekiwake slot opened up either by KirSHITma getting promoted or Wakatakakoga MKing, you can go on sumodb to look up whatever historical precedents there are, seems like there is also an outside chance at having two S2s next banzuke if both Dan and Takyasu end up with high enough double digit scores.

Koga won again.
Whats the consensus on the possibility of Kyoda winning jonokuchi? Based yusho getter or cringe for being in your mid 20s and beating up on a bunch of 15 year old noobs?
Also there is a guy in Jonidan with the shikona Bigaznman

His performance in his last match last basho pissed me off. Not only did it let Daiamami get a win that staved off a potential demotion to makushita, but Dewanoryu showed basically no fighting spirit. Like dude, you are 3-3 and Ms2w and it's Daiamami, don't just give up when you're pushed to the tawara.

He's pretty large. Speaking of Mongolians, supposedly the JSA has made up their minds on Ochilsaikan; he's allowed to join Isegahama since they decided to not count Seihakuho as an Isegahama wrestler but a Miyagino wrestler under Isegahama's custody.

Takayasu, Ura, Fujinokawa
Atamifuji, Mitakeumi, Tamawashi

Kirishima
Ichiyamamoto
Gonoyama, Kotoshoho
I don't mind any of them winning, but I prefer some of them more than others.

If you're still wondering why Hiro uses "a" and "the" poorly, it's because only western European languages have those words, so Nips can't use them properly the same way we struggle with ใฏ and ใŒ.

Hiro's English is bad, but to me it's not so much the bad English, but the style of speaking.
Hiro sounds like a cowboy voicing a wrestling commercial, so I figure he has actually lived in the US or studied the language very well, only he focused on the wrong aspects, probably the aspects he thinks cool, like sounding like the guys in the movies.
This makes me angry.
