The decision follows a controversial 50m penalty against Fremantle for dissent, which the AFL now says “didn’t go far enough.”

“We paid the 50, but we didn’t pay the follow-up 50s we could have for the eye-roll and the exhale,” McBurney admitted. “We let the game slip.”

“Those are the moments where an experienced umpire should step in and find a high tackle free to Collingwood, or at least call a block 30 metres off the ball,” McBurney said.

“Instead, these umpires let Fremantle lock the ball inside 50 and allowed Josh Treacy to take a mark and waste precious seconds. That’s not what this league is about.”

In addition to their suspensions, the four umpires will be required to present to the Collingwood Football Club and explain their actions before being considered for selection again.
