Six*, if you maintain that only Ozeki wins count.
Amusingly enough, if you jacked the requirement to 4 consecutive, you'd only lose two of them

* Except that one of those in picrelated didn't even get the rope after 3 in a row. Tamanishiki in 1930 went JY-Y-Y-Y and was told to kick rocks at Ozeki, even though the sole Yokozuna retired in that last cup. So they went 2 more years without a Yokozuna, only to finally promote him after a fucking 7-4 in 1932. They just did things different back then

So here's the official ranking of who has the highest chances to yusho.

1) Aonishiki
2) Kirishima
3) Ichiyamamoto
4) Tamawashi
5) Onosato

And I'm deadly serious. Before you call me a Dan dick rider remember, he's already faced the entire Sanyaku so is being fed shitters. Tomorrow he has Abi whose style feels like a poor matchup for someone as solidly grounded and strong on the belt as Aonishiki. The highest rank Kirishima has faced so far is Komusubi, and Onosato should be a default loss for him. Waka could go either way.

The problem with Ichi is there's only 5 days left and the Sanyaku are going to be too busy fighting each other to have much time for him. If he beats Takayasu tomorrow he's going at least 12-3.

Ichi will probably face Wakataka at some point who he's 2-1 against surprisingly. This is the problem when you have a tournament with effectively 5 sanyaku (and one of them is a hobbled Kotozakura); there's not enough guys to go around smacking down all the maegashira reaching above their station. We thought the last basho was a turning point for these kinds things to stop happening, but everyone besides Kirishima and Takayasu are underperforming or kyujo.
Anonymous United Kingdom No.149902564
>>149901906
I think the problem is that there's too many guys still in contention so late in the game that there isn't enough time to put them in the Sanyaku's chanko bowl. Give it two days and the guys at 8-2 or better will have dwindled down to just two, maybe three.

Excuse me? Waka's 6-4 is perfectly fine for a Sekiwake, and Onosato not winning his debut was expected if we're being honest. He's still bouncing fatsos around on the whole. Maybe when Aonishiki claims his Komusubi spot next banzuke and Daieisho returns (hopefully not below M5e) things will get a bit more normal.

I'm too lazy to calculate, but I would like to see kinboshi rates of a couple of great yokozunas and a couple of mediocre ones at this point in their careers, not now that all is said and done. They surely got better with time, no?

Also worth noting that we're at a historic low when it comes to sanyaku size and those stats don't divide by maegashira bouts but by all bouts.

At the 8-bout mark against maegashira, Hakuho, Hokutoumi, and Takanoha were all perfect, Harumafuji was 87.5% (7-1), and both Hoshoryu and Onosato are 62.5% (5-3).
At the 21-bout mark, Hakuho, Hokutoumi, and Takanohana were all 95.24% (20-1), Harumafuji was 80.95% (17-4) and Hoshoryu is now 61.9% (13-8).
Hakuho would continue to trend upwards for another 7 years before starting to decline, Takanohana would steadily decline until 1999 but still at a high win rate overall, Hokutoumi would have a strong year-long stretch in late-88/early-89 before declining, and Harumafuji would be pretty inconsistent but still never lower than 75%. Hakuho had more career matches at ozeki or lower sanyaku when he became yokozuna than Onosato has in total career matches and Hakuho also had years of professional experience before making sanyaku.

Does he just have to walk in a straight line right after the tachiai? And that's not even hyperbole; it's literally how he ALMOST won the previous basho with zensho yusho: by walking in a straight line.

So what do you guys think the solution is to Aonishiki? Thrusting is difficult due to his low stance, despite that stance he's extremely difficult to slap down, and he's skilled on the belt. It seems like the only solution anyone has found so far is blasting him out with yorikiri, but that requires you to be strong enough to do so (Onosato).

You are allowed to kick above the waist, so the solution is to wait for him to get low enough and then step on his back.
Anonymous United Kingdom No.149932176

The solution is to stop being a fatso who charges and slaps mindlessly, and actually put some thought into what you're doing and why you're doing it. Everyone is too set in their muscle memory fatslapping ways, and Aonishiki is disrupting the whole thing just by using a little brainpower. His loss against Takayasu was arguable since even Kisenosato thinks Takayasu's hand went down, so his only true loss this basho is from THE overwhelming force in sumo.

The guy is fucking nuts, and you won't beat him if you go in mindlessly.

I think Aonishiki will dominate quite a bit for now because: 1. He's too young; 2. He's fearless.

Right now, Aonishiki must be feeling like the "Alexander the Great" of sumo. Nothing prevents other rikishi from opting for unconventional moves (and therefore difficult for your opponents to predict), but everyone has gotten used to the belly fight of pushing with your gut or dropping onto your opponent, tiring them out with your enormous weight. No one thinks, "Hey, I'll attack his knees." Ura is also a lower back wrestler, always crouching, but more prone to jumping (?) than Aonishiki.

As long as Aonishiki isn't afraid to do something improvised and surprising against his opponents, isn't injured, and isn't King Kong (Onosato) his opponent, he'll find a way to defeat them.

That's the big one though, isn't it. I don't see this style lending itself to longevity, he already gets domed multiple times per basho like vs Abi

Has Onosato ever once ever been in a neutral standoff with an opponent? I'm serious, you see that shit all the time where it's like they're resting for a minute, but I don't remember Onosato ever once doing it.

I think every time he gets in a bind with someone, he gets ptsd to Hoshoryu tossing his ass and as a pavlovian response immediately starts moving so he can't be thrown.
Anonymous United Kingdom No.149934095

Onosato getting in a bind seems to mean his opponent isn't going backwards, and his instincts seem to tell him to go backwards and pull. I'm not sure he's aware of just how huge he is. Like bro just stand there, they shouldn't be able to move you if you're still pushing. You're 6'5, just Hokuseiho it and lean on them to tire them out until they're forced into a desperation play.

Its time for anti-Dans admit they were wrong and apologize. If you've complained about Dan-posters or Dan-posting or made posts critical of Dan's sumo in the past this is your opportunity to make things right.
