There's two things of note here.

People always bang on about how CGI is good because filmmakers can do anything. I disagree. Limitations and boundaries and restrictions force creativity and imagination. A non-CGI example is Billy Wilder. One of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Yet once the Motion Picture Code was no longer an issue, and he could make pretty much anything he wanted, he was suddenly floundering and he never really made nothing of note again.
Effects are the same. When filmmakers had to imagine and think and problem solve and use their limited resources as best they could. The effects in Jurassic Park are so good BECAUSE Spielberg couldn't do anything. So he had to think about how to best use what he had. Everything had to be planned out and prepared to the absolute nth degree. The result is one of the most breathtaking visual effects ever seen in movies. Every scene is fantastic, even when the CGI looks a bit ropey the spell is never broken BECAUSE they've planned and prepared and you're sold on their vision, with the addition of some incredible practical effects that our brains are more willing to buy into because we know we're seeing something real.
CGI vs practical is a simple equation in my book. Practical effects are slight of hand. Like seeing a magician. We know it's not real. We know we're not REALLY seeing a T-Rex attack a car. But it's slight of hand and it's something real really being done in front of us so we go along with it. Compared to CGI which is computer cartoons. It's not real. Nothing practically exists. We're just watching something made up. It's sort of the difference between seeing a talented magician versus a computer show. Both can be impressive, but our brains react differently to the two techniques.
