Onosato is going into his 11th match against maegashitters, Hakuho often faced as few as 5 or 6 in a basho and there were occasions when he dropped two of those matches. So all the screeching about Onosato is extremely misinformed.
Hosh faced 3 and lost all of them, thats bad.

same reason why Abi needs to henka, keeping the other guy confused about what you're going to do next is important. if you don't to it then the other guy can over commit against you worry free.
Onosato just sucks at pulling & slapdowns, its not that he does them at all thats bad, other guys are just fine using those techniques to win, Onosato is bad at using them.
Onosato is a dai yokozuna when he is moving forward and M12w moving backwards

We've gone over this. Numeru-san showed us the stats. Both of our current yokozuna have had historically bad debuts by the metric of kinboshi not dispensed divided by kinboshi eligible matches. You are the one who is misinformed. Whatever the new era might be, it hasn't started yet. We're still in the crater left by Hakuho.

Kinboshi system is a little broken if you ask me. Sumo itself already has no weight divisions, so everyone has a chance by default. The kinboshi system ignores the fact that there are rising stars climbing to the top at full speed (like Onosato himself and I guess Kusano now) and ex sanyaku wrestlers who got demoted. Of course they'll eventually face sanyaku wrestlers, which means they'll fight someone on their skill level. Not really saying this is an excuse to lose to jobbers, but this isn't a proper way to measure his performance.

Whether someone is a rising star or a worn out veteran makes no difference. They are ranked where they are for a reason, according to their recent performance. Yokozuna losing to a lower ranked opponent should be rare.

Wakamotoharu reached Makuuchi at 28, Tamashoho did it at 31. Tamawashi has been competing for 21 years. Should they be denied kinboshi just for that? Or should one's kinboshi be retroactively erased once they reach sanyaku?

Is it the end-all be-all of performance measurment? No. Does it measure something meaningful? Yes.

If they didn't suck so hard at that particular metric, we would just be discussing their overall records.

He did it successfully in the Ichiyamamoto and Takerufuji matches, in the wakamotoharu and Oho matches he was overpowered, Takayasu stopped his charge in the first match, Takayasu in the playoff and Wakatakakage almost threw him at the edge.

He can't 100% rely on pushing.

Dan & Onosato both has their makuuchi debut at M15 followed by consecutive 11-4s and Onosato landed a komusubi west for his 3rd makuuchi basho and ppl were complaining that Dan only got M1e, however they both got their first wins against yokozuna in their 3rd basho and only Dan got a kinboshi so maybe it was Onosato who got the short end of the stick

Tamawashi might have a financial incentive to lose tonight, especially if Abi wins. Those two will be the ones vying for the valuable open sanyaku slot for Aki, however if Takayasu does well enough to open up the S2 slot for himself then both komusubi ranks will be open and Tamawashi is pretty much guaranteed one of them. Since Abi is two ranks ahead of Tom and only one win behind him, Tom getting to komusubi with only one slot open seems somewhat far fetched

Historically men and womens sumo were run by separate organizations. When the Meiji government considered banning sumo as a whole as being outdated and barbaric, mens sumo was permitted to continue because they had influential allies in government. The idea of women being impure because of menstrual blood was invented around this time to give a religious justification, as the Meiji government was also pushing state Shinto as a singular established religion instead of a hodgepodge of regional beliefs syncretized with Buddhism and other imported foreign mythologies.

>Mita sweeps his sumo debut and quickly rises
>Mita becomes a sekitori
>Even with your injury, you're still "ahead" of Mita
>Your injury worsens, your oyakata has "the talk" with you: surgery now or tears later
>You agree to have the surgery; juryo is very tough, and Mita won't advance much

If Aonishiki wins out, we will see him at S2w. If he gets 12 wins, they could give him sekiwake as well. Historically they have not opened up an extra sekiwake slot for 11 wins at m1 as much recently. So I think it'll be three sekiwake, K1e Takayasu and K1w would be Abi or Tamawashi.

Takayasu back in Nov 2022 is precedent for 12 wins being enough for a M1e to force a sekiwake overhang. However, he was the first maegashira to force an overhang since 2004.

Hot take:

If for some reason Aonishiki had entered this tournament ranked at Yokozuna, as in straight up M9->Y, he wouldn't be doing this well. He got to completely surprise the entire Sanyaku with his style of going for the legs. If he'd been Yokozuna this basho the Sanyaku would've had more time to watch him fight and see how to counteract him before they faced him. On no planet would Hoshoryu have given up his belt so easily if he knew what Dan was capable of beforehand.

He's been suffering from random injuries for the last better part of a year, going kyujo twice at some point. This basho he's looked powerful as fuck. He made Onosato look about as bad as Dan made Hoshoryu look.

His history in freestyle wrestling no doubt helped him a lot because in freestyle one fall doesn't end a match. In sumo doing 10 practice bouts in a day is a big deal, but in freestyle you might fight through that many takedowns in just a few practice matches so overall you experience the situation of the what would be winning/losing move in sumo a lot more often than you see it in sumo practice.

I don't get why more rikishi aren't belt fighters. All of the last 8 yokozuna were primarily belt fighters (including Kisenosato and Onosato, they might not have gone for throws but they focused on yorikiri by way of the mawashi) so you'd think people would wise up and think "hmm maybe having belt skills is important"

The meta changes with the years, the more push focused sumo nowadays is from a variety of factors.
Easier to teach and learn
Basic techniques are most effective
Less prone to injury compared to grappling/throws
Increased average weight of sekitori after the hawaians set a precedent as well.

I'll be honest: all anti-dans, the damned Bolsheviks who oppose the Tsar of the Mawashi, must surrender their weapons within the next few hours and present themselves to the Aonishikist authorities.
Anti-dan attitudes will never again be tolerated in /sumo/.
You have until the makuuchi bouts begin to surrender to the authorities and await trial; those who do not do so after this deadline will be hunted down, arrested, and forced to live out the rest of their days in the Ikazuchi sumo stable/labor camp, preparing chanko and serving as an attendant to Shishi.

May the gods of sumo bless the 76th Yokozuna Aonishiki "The Ghost of Kiev"

Has Kotoshoho been permainjured and it suddenly got better? I don't fully understand how he's putting on such a performance. He's basically been grabbing people and walking them out except for 'sato who swung a little bit then pushed out. He's not doing anything crazy or technical, mostly just overpowering them or pushing from a good angle.

What the hell will happen if Onosato finishes 9-6 in his debut? Tomorrow he'll fight Wakatakakage, who's one of the rikishi who gives him the most fight. What if Onosato loses?
Even with that loss, I see it as impossible for Onosato to lose to Kotozakura, especially considering the terrible performance he's been doing as an ozeki. But what if Onosato does something stupid like "advancing backward," as he's done in several bouts this basho?
Is 9-6 too bad for a yokozuna? And in his debut?

It's a total clown basho and you know it. In a sane world the cream of sumo's crop wouldn't be acting like a deer in the headlights when confronted with basic freestyle wrestling techniques. Aonishiki is a good enough fighter but he's undersized and green, and has no business running roughshod over the banzuke in the way that he's been doing. It makes the entire sport look like a joke - put the useless fat cunts on a diet and retrain them for judo. Clown basho.

while 10-5 is the unwritten standard "yokozuna KK", he'll get cut some slack for his first basho. IF, however, this level of performance becomes the norm, then he'll start getting pressure to retire.

Takakeisho has some of the craziest belt throws you'll ever see: with his ridiculously small arm compared to his body, pivoting his opponent; his body practically served as an anchor for the throws, but again, his arms were too small, and to do something like that he needed to have the opponent very close, reach his mawashi, not have his opponent break his grip, and not have his opponent in a better position. In other words, the exact opposite of his sumo style, but when the miraculous opportunity arose, Takakeisho opted for the mawashi.

Fair enough. That really only limits it to Abi, Gonoyama, and Daieisho right now; a lot of the other pusher-thrusters can semi-competently fight on the belt which is reflected by a sizable number of yorikiri wins.
