Adidas and Nike supply individual players (Adidas - Messi / Nike - Ronaldo), clubs (Adidas - Real, United, Bayern / Nike - Barca, City, PSG), and national teams. Germany was the crown jewel of adidas, but Nike decided to snatch it. And so they made an absurd offer while adidas thought the old partnership would continue with a more modest deal because of tradition. Little did they know that the DFB is desperate for money, even for football organization standards
National teams do have sponsors, but they don't wear them on shirts. They have partnerships, and they get paid for that. The German national team used to partner with Mercedes/Daimler-Benz for example, but then Volkswagen made a better offer. Now you see commercials of national team players driving VW cars
