Absolutely no horse in either of these races, who should I be rooting for?

Seiran Taito (青藍泰斗) is a private school from Tochigi Prefecture. While this is technically Seiran's second Koshien appearance, it might as well be their first. The last time they appeared in Koshien was Summer 1990 where they lost in the first round, if they manage to win today it would be their first ever win at Koshien. One fun thing about the school is that they wear very distinct blue uniforms that very much stand out from the crowd of white/grey of other schools.

Key player: Nagai Shunya (永井竣也) is a 3rd year pitcher and Seiran’s ace. He threw 24 innings in the qualifiers, allowing just 2 earned runs for a 0.75 ERA, with 12 hits, 4 walks, and 9 strikeouts. He appeared in only 3 of the 5 games, (maybe because the team is trying to keep him rested?)

Saga Kita (佐賀北) is a public school from Saga Prefecture. They are considered a legendary team, as they were the last public school to win Koshien, all the way back in 2007. Despite having made five Koshien appearances, they have never won a single game outside of that Cinderella run in 2007. Every other appearance has ended in a firs round loss. By the way, if you’re wondering who they beat in the 2007 finals, it was Koryo.

Key player: Inatomi Rihito (稲富理人), a 3rd year pitcher not considered a draft candidate, was dominant during the Saga qualifiers. He pitched 41 innings, allowing just 20 hits, striking out 29 batters, and giving up only 3 earned runs. He started all 5 games, going the full 9 innings in 4 of them.

Ichi Funabashi (市立船橋) is a public school from Chiba Prefecture. One of only 6 public schools are this years tournament, this will be Funabashi's 9th Koshien appearance overall. Their best ever result came in Summer 1993 where they lost in the semi-finals and their most recent appearance was in Summer 2022 where they lost in the second round. The school is actually known more for its soccer club, which has won the soccer koshien 5 times. Just glancing at the Wikipedia page it seems the school has a poor reputation with the brass band, soccer club, and volleyball club all having some sort of scandal, baseball club looks like they're in the clear though.

Key player: Yamato Hanashima (花嶋大和) #2, 3rd year, 2025 draft candidate, catcher. leader of the offence scoring 11 RBIs and 1 HR in the Chiba qualifiers. he suffered a scary moment in the final qualification game where he got hit in the head by the pitch and got cut open. He was able to keep playing with a bloody bandage on his face and he would dramatically hit a 2 run double in the bottom of the 10th which helped Funabashi come back and win the game.

Meiho (明豊) is a private school from Oita Prefecture. Local powerhouse from Oita Prefecture, they've made summer Koshien for the last 5 years straight. This will be their 17th appearance at Koshien overall (spring and summer). The closest they have got to winning was 2019 spring when they reached the semi-finals. Their last appearance was last summer where they got knocked out in the first round.

Koshien appearance, having made their first all the way back in 1932. Gifusho have won Koshien 4 times (3 spring, 1 summer) although these were all in the distant past (30s and 40s). Their last Koshien appearance was summer 2022 where they lost in the first round.

Yamagata: Nichidai Yamagata (日大山形) is a private school from Yamagata Prefecture. They have been to Koshien 25 times, the most out of any school from Yamagata, with their last appearance coming in Summer 2023 where they lost in the first round. Despite having 25 appearances, they have never won, with Nichidai's best result coming in Summer 2013 when they made it to the semi-finals. The school is not to be confused with the Nichidai from West Tokyo who also appear in this tournament, the reason their names are similar is because they are both affiliated with Nihon University.

Hokkai (北海) is a private school from (South) Hokkaido Prefecture. Hokkai are the traditional powerhouse school from South Hokkaido, having made it to Koshien a total of 55 times. Despite this however, they have never won Koshien, the closest they ever came was in Summer 2016 when they lost in the finals to Sakushin Gakuin of Tochigi. Their last Koshien appearance was in Spring 2024 where they lost in the first round to Osaka Toin.

Tokaidai Kumamoto Seisho (東海大星翔) is a private school from Kumamoto Prefecture. This will be Tokai’s 4th ever Koshien appearance. They have never won a game at Koshien, having lost in the first round in all three of their previous appearances. Their most recent appearance at Koshien was in summer 2023. They have one current NPB player, Hanshin Tigers infielder Aoki Momozaki, who went to this school. Interestingly enough, this is also the alma mater of Eiichiro Oda, the author of One Piece.

Takagawa Gakuen (高川学園) is a private school from Yamaguchi Prefecture. This will be Takagawas 4th Koshien appearance, with them having made spring 1984, summer 2016 and 2021. They lost in the 2nd round in 2021 which was also the farthest they ever gone. The school is more known for its soccer team which has been quite successful. Mirai Toyama (未来富山) is a private school from Toyama Prefecture. From what I understand Mirai isn't a real 'school' per say it's a online only school that recruits players specifically for their baseball skills. This is their first appearance at Koshien but they were only founded in 2018. The 'school' has 24 students and all of them are on the baseball team. Most of the players come from the Kanto region with only 1 being from Toyama. The school also had an incident similar to Koryo where there was some internal violence among the players that was only revealed a few days before the tournament started but, it was mostly overshadowed by Koryo.

Multiple NPB hall of fame members, many politicians and a large number of actors/actresses.

While they have never won, their best result was a semi-finals loss in Summer 2022. Their dominance is partly due to Fukushima being a relatively weak prefecture, so they face less intense competition in qualifying. Actually, Yamanashi have historically been very unlucky in the summer with them never having made it out of the 2nd round, despite having appeared at Summer Koshien 10 times.

It's also another school where the soccer club is more successful than the baseball one, with Okayama Gakugeikan's soccer club winning the 2023 soccer Koshien. The only current NPB player from here is Kanemura Shoma, a pitcher drafted by Hokkaido in 2022.

Matsusho Gakuen (松商学園) is a private school from Nagano Prefecture. I would classify Matsusho Gakuen as a 'former powerhouse' as they used to be the Koshien mainstay from Nagano but in recent years they seem to have lost that position. Matsusho have been to Koshien 53 times and have won once (albeit all the way back in summer 1928). They have the 2nd most summer Koshien appearances with 38. Their last appearance was in summer 2021 where they made it to the 3rd round* (in the 2nd round the other team forfeited after their players caught covid).

Jinsei Gakuen (尽誠学園) is a private school from Kagawa Prefecture. Similarly to Matsusho last game, Jinsei are a school that was more successful in the past. Jinsei have been to Koshien 18 times, but have only made it once in the past 15 years (Summer 2016 where they lost in the first round). Jinsei had their best performances in the 80s and 90s where they reached the semi-finals twice but never managed to win. They have produced a bunch of NPB players and one MLB player, Hideki Irabu, who played for the Yankees, Expos and Rangers in the late 90s/early 2000s.

Higashi-Osaka Daikashiwara (東大阪大柏原) is a private school from Osaka Prefecture. The hero team who beat Osaka Toin in the finals of the Osaka qualifiers has arrived. They are the only all-boys school in the tournament, as all other schools are co-ed. Kyoto International (京都国際) is a private school from Kyoto Prefecture. A former Korean international school that has caused a lot of seethe among some people online. Kyoto are the reigning champions of summer Koshien, having won in 2024. Their success has been relatively recent with them having only made their first Koshien in 2021. They are the smallest 'true' school at the tournament with only 136 students, 67 of whom are girls so they have 69 boys to make team out of.

Kanto Daiichi (関東一) is a private school from East Tokyo. A powerhouse school from highly competitive East Tokyo, they've been to Koshien 17 times. Although they have never won, they were runners up twice, most recently against Kyoto International in last years summer Koshien. The school is also one of the largest at this tournament, with over 2500 students. (compare that to kyoto who only has 136)

Chuetsu (中越) is a private school from Niigata Prefecture. A very meh school from Niigata, they have made Koshien 12 with every single appearance being in the summer. They have lost in the first round in all but one of their Koshien appearances, with the lone exception being a 3rd round defeat in 1994. The last time they qualified was back in 2018. No team from Niigata has ever won Koshien.

Kamimura Gakuen (神村学園) is a private school from Kagoshima Prefecture. Kamimura have been a Koshien regular from Kagoshima since the mid 2000s with them having appeared in 14 tournaments in the past 20 years. Their best result was technically a runners-up in spring 2005 but more recently they have made the semi-finals of the last two summer Koshiens. Actually Kamimura lost to Kanto Daiichi last summer in the semis.

Soseikan (創成館) is a private school from Nagasaki Prefecture. The team has reached Koshien eight times in total, five in the summer and three in the spring. Their best performance came in Spring 2018, when they reached the quarterfinals before losing to powerhouse school, Chiben Wakayama. Their most recent appearance was last summer, where they were eliminated in the second round by Cinderella story team Taisha. While not traditionally known for producing pro talent, Soseikan has developed three NPB players, all drafted within the past five years.
