In Brazil the Babe is ubiquitously known as the King of Baseball just like Pelé is known as the King of Soccer, I was taught about him in High School. Here Michael Jordan is a famous celebrity in that someone might know his name but not necessarily the sport he played or even that he was an athlete.

Hate to say it, but it‘s probably between the Argentinian HGH abuser and the Portuguese boys underwear competition enjoyer. They play the by far most popular sport in the world and have, particularly thanks to the internet, massive campaigns behind them
Babe Ruth likely isn’t a household name outside countries where baseball is the number one sport (plus Canada). And most of the people there will now Messi and Ronaldo as well. Michael Jordan probably is a better shot, he has a sportswear brand, plays the overall bigger sport, and played more recently in a more globalized world where mass media was already a thing
Anonymous Germany No.150156252
Yeah, it's probably Jordan or Pissi/Rolando. The tricky part is: How exactly do we define "of all time"? Is it "the athlete, active or inactive, who is most well known right now" (so "of all time" meaning simply "an athlete from any given time human history" in this context) or is it "the athlete who was/is known by the highest percentage of people around the world at the same time at any given point in human history"?
I assume currently more people know Pissi and Rolando than Jordan. But maybe in the 90s the percentage of people who knew Jordan was higher back then than the percentage of people who know Pissi and Rolando right now.

Ive known Babe Ruth since childhood from the Sandlot movie and thats it. Michael Jordan was known all around the world. Same with Mike Tyson and Mohammed Ali. But thats just limiting to American sports. I'd say Messi, Cristiano or Maradona are all three more famous worldwide than Babe Ruth, MJ, LeBron

It can't be soccer players guys, i'll concede that babe ruth is also not as well known to non americans/japanese but if you include a footballer you just totally lose that whole section of the world. you can't have someone who is the most famous not known in the most influential and largest regions.

I think it's Ali all things considered. Maybe Jordan but that's also my own millennial bias.

>no Japanese or American knows any football player
Football is quite large in Japan and I am sure they know plenty of footballers, not to mention Messi and Ronaldo. Young Americans are relatively likely to have heard of them as well - much more likely than Europeans having heard of Babe Ruth at least, probably Jordan as well. Africa and India exist as well (unfortunately)

From the perspective of someone born and raised in the U.S., people know who Messi, Ronaldo, and maybe David Beckham are, and that’s about it. Some older folks will know Pele, otherwise you would either have to live near a bunch of spics or frequent communities like /sp/ to know anybody else.
I can’t speak for Japan, but based on the news and media they produce, soccer doesn’t seem that huge over there. Same with a lot of other large non-european countries.
If you want to contend that Messi and Ronaldo should be in the top 10 of all-time most famous athletes, I’m fine with that, but it’s pretty silly to fill the rest of that list with soccer players.

>Messi and Ronaldo

even these names are really not that well known in the US. the average person who would know who babe ruth or micheal jordan is would not know those names. I don't even know who they really are besides vaguely knowing I hear their names with soccer.
Anonymous United States No.150158726
>>150158616
In all honesty you’re probably right, but if you wanted to give people even an inkling of a chance to name one soccer player, they would either come up with Messi or Ronaldo just because they heard the names somewhere. I didn’t really want to mention this though, it might’ve made Gunther’s head explode to learn that our entire country doesn’t follow soccer.

Anybody on insta knows Messi and Ronaldo.
Ruth is in the same category as Arnold Palmer, meaning if you watch ESPN long enough he'll be in a montage or something.
Wouldn't surprise me if under 40s couldn't name Ruth if you showed them a picture while they'd probably recognize Messi from social media.
