So got a cultivator, wet the soil to soften it up a bit and then broke it all up with the cultivator. Sprinkled the grass seeds and then gave it a top coat with a bag of soil to help lock in the moisture. Watered morning and night (when there wasn't decent rain).
Fully took and now absolutely mogs my old grass to the point where that looks out of place.
