ESPN's been shit since forever. It's shittiness just changes.
In the 90s it was shit because all they had was endless Sports Center with the same hour of highlights for basically 20 hours of the day and maybe a baseball or basketball game to break it up.
In the 00s ESPN was shit because they followed whatever narrative was being pushed by the leagues because they were too tied in with the organizations. They started getting too Big Man and then when the steroid scandals came out they ended up in a Destalinization style situation where the guys they called gods for a decade now had to be violently purged.
The last decade ESPN has been shit because it's just Sports Talk from Ex-Jocks and Gambling Dweebs doing Numbers games.
Their best 00s-10s non-game content was journalists talking sports.
But ESPN was always terrible and will always be terrible. They only cover sports they're invested in and they've always cared about narrative far too much to the point where it feels like they're taking sides and kissing feet.
