Japan produces a bunch of ''not so great or famous but somewhat decent'' players and the Japanese NT usually slightly exceeds people's expectations
So it's kinda like the Switzerland NT and there's nothing really weird about it

what is it about the japanese league and system that is improving their footy culture and their overall play/ability at such a quick rate? Japan was literally never into football until the 90s but somehow became intereste because of football anime and now they're technically the most successful national team from there.

From my perspective, I actually envy MLS, which is now flush with money and has become a destination where star players from all over the world gather.
In the early 1990s, that was exactly what the J.League was.
Back then, soccer’s popularity in Japan was at its peak, and the newly born J.League attracted stars from around the world such as Zico, Leonardo, Stojković, Dunga, Buchwald, and Littbarski.
In the end, it couldn’t surpass baseball in popularity, and nowadays the league has lost much of its money and shrunk in scale.
Most stadiums are not even soccer-specific; they are multipurpose venues with running tracks.
When I look at Western stadiums without those ugly tracks, where the pitch is much closer to the stands, I can’t help but feel truly envious.

Tbh, we’re still lacking the squad depth to realistically make a WC quarterfinal run. What we really need are more starters in the Bundesliga, Serie A, and ideally the Premier League, basically, players consistently starting in the top 5 leagues.

Doesn’t have to be big clubs either.
Mid-table or even relegation-battling sides are fine, as long as we can build out a full three-deep roster of top 5 league players.
Right now, when you look at the projected squad and still see guys from 2nd division level teams like Southampton in the mix, it shows we’re just not there yet.

In the 21st century, Japan reached KO 4 out of 6 times. Worst Korea reached KO 3 out of 6 times.
Japan has never gone beyond R16. Worst Korea reached Semis.
K League clubs have better H2H record to J League clubs in Asian Champions League.

Unironically it's their collective autism. They established goals like win world cup by 2050 o algo and pursue them religiously. J League parity is kino though. Clubs largely compete on tactics unlike Europoid football where it's wage bill determining

Most world cup teams that won had an absolute legend that fans and the country could anchor off of. When will Japan have that player?
Anonymous Japan No.150332901 >>150335533

There’s no way we’re winning the next World Cup.
Countries like the Netherlands and Portugal, who’ve had world-class squads for decades, still haven’t lifted the trophy. For us, with the round of 16 as our best-ever result, winning it all would be so absurd that even an anime wouldn’t dare write such a bullshit script.
Our realistic next goal should be making the quarterfinals, nothing more, nothing less.
