From my perspective, I actually envy MLS, which is now flush with money and has become a destination where star players from all over the world gather.
In the early 1990s, that was exactly what the J.League was.
Back then, soccer’s popularity in Japan was at its peak, and the newly born J.League attracted stars from around the world such as Zico, Leonardo, Stojković, Dunga, Buchwald, and Littbarski.
In the end, it couldn’t surpass baseball in popularity, and nowadays the league has lost much of its money and shrunk in scale.
Most stadiums are not even soccer-specific; they are multipurpose venues with running tracks.
When I look at Western stadiums without those ugly tracks, where the pitch is much closer to the stands, I can’t help but feel truly envious.
