Okinawa Shogaku (沖縄尚学) is a private school from Okinawa Prefecture. They're the premier team from Okinawa, having made it to Koshien 19 times, the most out of any school from the prefecture. They're one of only 2 Okinawan schools to have ever won the tournament, they did so twice in Spring. (1999 and 2008) If they win today, it will be their first ever summer Koshien victory. Okinawa Shogaku's path to the finals has been the harder one, with 4 out of the 5 schools they beat having won at Koshien previously. (Naruto, Sendai Ikuei, Toyo Himeji and, Yamanashi Gakuin) The media gave them the letter grade of B going into the tournament.

Nichidai San (日大三) is a private school from West Tokyo. They’re the strongest program in the region, with 40 Koshien appearances and three championships to their name (spring 1971, summer 2001, and 2011). Compared to Okinawa Shogaku, Nichidai San have had an easier road to the final, receiving a first round bye and facing weaker opponents. They played a first time qualifier in the second round and a public school in the semifinals. The media also gave them the letter grade of B going into the tournament.

Also, there's a keirin G1 tournament (the biggest type of events in that sport besides the Grand Prix at the end of the year) which takes place during "Golden Week" in Japan which has a flag as a trophy but I think they model that race after Koshien.

how good are Koshien teams anyway, are they better than US high school teams, I have no frame of reference. some of those high schools in California and Florida seem to produce a lot of MLB players.
