Because ultimately Soul is a made up concept that requires 3 things
>A city that's not particularly big, but still big enough to be considered a city
Philadelphia right down there under NYC is perfect for that. It's basically a famous enough city non-Americans can figure out where it is, it has a little old town, a little junkieville, a tourist area that's basically compacted together.
>Fanbase that seems committed
Sports teams are important in Philadelphia, in New York and LA you have the problem of "the quarterback and point guard aren't the biggest celebrity" on top of being too big to be soulful.
You might have M Night Shamalan or something make a restaurant appearance, but he's fairly subtle, you could easily mistake him for a guy who works in finance cause he's behind the camera.
>A team wealthy enough to keep the star players, but poor enough to not be constantly signing big name players
Muh Homegrown Talent is really important to soulfulness. What ultimately kills the big city teams ability to reach soulfulness is that the Dodgers or Yankees will get Kershaw or Judge via their farm system, and supplement that sliver of homegrown talent with guys from small clubs for 30-50 million a year.
Simply put, Philadelphia is the perfect American city for soulful sports teams in the Soul/Soulless era.
Part of the reason I hate the concept of soul. Feels like you're just bandwagoning teams designed to not be bandwagoned on the idea that it's less bandwagon to bandwagon a team that's less bandwagoned.
End of the day, the only difference between the Eagles and the Giants is that the Giants used to win a decade ago and the Eagles are winning now and the Phillies aren't trying to beat out Jay-Z for a casino license.
