>random no namer from Brazil
>plays for some random who cares club
>can't leave the country because supposedly he's declared "national treasure"
>press claims Brazilian clubs were equal to European ones at the time
>he's believed to be the best player of all time
Am I supposed to believe this bs?

Dump footage with summary of the opponents and how they'd compare against teams from Europe at the time. Then we can work out if it's bs or not.

They were better, Brazil had the best league in the world at the time. There's a reason they won all those world cups

And Flamengo also just won the U20 Club World Cup yesterday. If all players played on their own national leagues Brazil would still dominate to this day even at club level.

Not disagreeing, especially about the Brazil wc teams.
However, were European teams such as Madrid and Juventus, who'd include players from abroad, better club teams than Santos and friends? Would Pele have had the same success in Serie A against Inter Milan in the mid 60s?

I don't rate him as the GOAT, he may have been the best of his era and I also believe Brazil had one of the best leagues at the time but Maradona and Messi are a tier above, Pele is not in that tier. Pele always played with world class teams. Brazil didn't even need him to win 1962, they would have won 1958 without him too. Argentina would not win 1986 without Maradona or 2022 without Messi.

I don't know about that because Germany, Spain and Italy, not to mention the Netherlands, have always produced better all round players than Brazil. NL and cruyff gave us total footballers. Italy gave us the art of defending. These are important things for Brazilians to consider about football history. European footballers are generally much smarter.

Messi played in the best Barcelona of all time. After Xavi and Iniesta retired he didn't win a single Champions League.

at the time the divide europe/south america wasn't that big

Also Moratti senior tried to buy him, but there was a huge uproar in brazil and it didn't happen in the end.

You absolute fucking imbecile, I wasn’t saying anything about the quality or the prestigiousness of the tournament, but using it as a means to show that if the players played on their own national leagues the Brazilian league would be the strongest since U20 teams generally don’t have players from other countries, you illiterate fucking animal.

yeah, that time most leagues had 98% domestic players anyway and Brazil had by far the most talent in their league so much so, they had to leave behind a lot of good players. For what it's worth Santos did play in some friendlies and tournaments with euro teams and they were usually better

That's too vague for a serious discussion. I can look it up but give us facts about the games in which you claim Santos were usually better because that sounds like a cope.

Difficult to argue with this. Absolute genius with the ball. There are others who were better all round footballers though. I'd give you Cruyff while not in the mood to debate it. Peace fren...

Messi is the best player of all time.

Players from long ago like Pele and Maradona became "mythified" over time and their skills as individual players, while certainly the elite of their times, are fantasized and idealized far above reality because of their status as legends, the cultural impact they had in and outside the pitch and the symbolism surrounding their achievements.

a neckbeard high on growth hormones who pissed and pooped his pants everytime he had to face Chile in a penalty shootout? the same vomiting crybaby who couldn't crack it outside of Uefalona? the same choke artist who bawled his heart out after another final lost and then retired from the argie NT, all because he couldn't deal with the pressure? the same Eibar babby that had to retire two years early to train in Ligue1 before committing to a credible quest for a World Cup, played in November?

The game left Pele behind. He's just not that good. Until he wins a modern day world cup or other significant trophy, he will be what he has always been - a stat padder against literal farmers.

Pelé changed the game and the style of Brazilian football. The dude inspired a whole generation of legends Garrincha, Tostão, Rivelino, etc. And their shit still matters today. These Brazilians laid the foundation of football, and most of the dribbles you see now? They invented that. They made football global, Brazil snagged 3 World Cups, left a huge legacy, iconic jerseys, and inspiration for future champs (1994, 2002).

Someone should make a thread about why Messi (who’s basically on Pelé’s level, maybe even higher) was such a loser in Argentina. Guy spent his whole career abroad and couldn’t do jack at home.
