National teams overlook good players all the time if they don't play for some well known club.
For example, joao pedro was almost completely ignored for the brazilian team before he signed for chelsea even though they have an incredible dearth of good strikers.
Of course this is not to take away from the main point of your post. She does like to go for these niche takes but I don't think that necessarily points to an overall lack of expertise and knowledge.
