Priority access is enough, a discount is unnecessary. Right now northern clubs can only match bids on 1 academy player in the first round if they're a top 4 team. Seems reasonable to me.

There are two problems with this argument. First, Adelaide, Port Adelaide, West Coast and Fremantle all exist; interstate clubs that also feel the pressure of retaining Victorian talents. Their greatest sin is they are not in states where the AFL is looking to expand, so they aren't given privileged access to players like the Northern clubs do. The second problem I have is that I don't agree that players desert interstate clubs because they aren't in Victoria. The much-touted go home 5 all left when Brisbane was at rock bottom. It's not about St Kilda, but the competition. The basic premise of the draft is that if a team is shit, then they have access to elite talent to improve them. With the current system you have the 'haves' (the teams with exclusive access to high-end talent regardless of where they place) and the 'have nots' (the clubs who aren't performing well, so can't attract free-agents, but also face their first round pick being moved back several times due to academy and F/S picks).

For what it's worth, I'm conflicted by the F/S picks and acknowledge that Brisbane has just got incredibly lucky. I understand the romance behind it, but while clubs are creating dedicated pipelines to cultivate their F/S talent, it's ultimately a game of chance and it contradicts the equalisation aspect of the draft.

I'd be fine with that. The system should probably push teams towards retaining their first round pick to match. However it's not like teams don't trade out assets to get those second round picks. One of the 6 first rounders Tigers used last year was traded to them from the Lions. They got that through trading a bunch of picks they never would have used to the Lions. Other teams do benefit from the F/S and academy situations if they're willing to trade. Is it better that the Lions should use that first rounder to match or is it better that another rebuilding team like the Tigers gets to use it?
