This isn't quite right. Of course you have older gems like Sevilla, but Spain in particular has plenty of cities with more modern buildings that are still better than Manchester. A Coruña, Barcelona, Valencia. Considering the shit taste football players often have, they'd probably love Benidorm if there were any big football clubs in the area.

It's not the architecture. It's the weather, the beches, the lifestyle and maybe the people too.

It's not that northern england cities are ugly, it's that these people are used to perpetual sunshine, palm trees and cities with a more outdoor atmosphere. Manchester is overcast and bricky, you can find a good place to drink and listen to music, that's for sure.
