I'm sure you have a cool football culture but international customers don't care about that. When Chelsea and Man City came the league became more competitive and exciting at the top so internationals started watching. Before there was only Man United winning it almost every year.

The premier league has been extraordinarily well run for the past 10 years. Basically scattered their television rights across the entire world, because its player base is so international and diverse, every nation had someone to support and give them a reason to watch.

In Germany it was a political decision to pump that much money into Bayern after Bundesliga was more or less irrelevant internationally in the mid 2000s.
