To actually have hopes, I would have had to be the best or one of the best in my village club's team. I wasn't. We had a surprisingly good team, so we regularly made an appearance at bigger youth tournaments, where we sometimes played against the local pro club, the pride of the region. I knew right away that this was a different world
I had a few teammates who had the right to dream. One of my best friends really was extremely good. He had the vision, the game IQ, the technique, the speed and agility. But he was quite short for his age, not very confident ... and he broke his leg in an accident right as our local pro club wanted him. Later on, he kept on being a great player, but he often got fucked over by early bloomers who were like 30kg heavier than him. And he ended up tearing his ACL twice, so he stopped at 16 once the doctors told him to
Some people may have the talent, but the stars don't align themselves in their favor and their bodies aren't made to withstand the strain
In the case of my friend, he as well never seriously pursued it. His dad later told me that the family felt like they were quite in a pickle when it turned out that their son may have the talent to try to go pro instead of just playing for fun before eventually going to university and having a "real" career
