East Germans have always been considered uncultured, backwards, low IQ poor people. Despite the unification, West Germany looks down on the former East Germans and they are usually ignored by national politics too. To this day East Germany has less facilities like high speed rail, universities etc.
Just like with all frowned upon groups, this has caused a great sense of local pride and 'us vs. them' thinking.
