Tbh his resume is still a bit sketch. People say Mayweather was a cherry picker (which i disagree with) but cmon Spence flew out of his car like Superman, Porter was semi retired and Canelo hasn't had a KO in almost 5 years. Bud picked his fights well and blamed king jew Arum for somehow holding him back when all these fighters were at their peak.

I guess you can only fight what's in front of you. Would Usyk beat a AJ that wasn't gun shy from the Ruiz loss and Fury before he blew up to 600 pounds and lost his legs? Who knows.

The greatest fighters always carefully managed their careers. Mayweather didn't fight Pac until he had clearly lost a step. Sugar Ray Leonard insisting on pillow gloves and a giant ring so he could dance around Hagler. Jon Jones had zero interest in fighting Rumble Johnson because he knew that power and wrestling would make a difficult opponent. Notice how these guys always are high 'fight IQ' types, they understand that half the fight happens before the contract is even signed. Canelo was great, but he's just a meat-head bully. The next tier of fighter has higher ring-IQ. That's guys like Mayweather, Hopkins, Usyk.

Hard to say with him versus Usyk. Almost all of their famous wins were people past their peak or had losses that changed them. So you look at the less known fighters.

I think prime Bredis gives Usyk an edge over Bud and that Bredis win will age like fine wine even more if Opetai easily takes out Zurdo and grabs a heavyweight belt on top of that. You gonna look back and say damn Usyk beat the guy in his prime that broke Opetai's jaw at 39 and gave him a close fight.

Bud doesn't really have anything like this where he beat a fighter that wasn't well known that later on grabbed a good win or had a close fight with an up and coming great. Madrimov seemed like he could be GGG Jr but got smashed up by Ortiz so that went out the window quick.
Anonymous United States No.150796639

He beat everyone when he was at 140. Beat all but one notable name at 147 (Boots).

I dont really know what's he's going to do next. Maybe he goes back to 154, maybe he stays at 168. If I was him I'd clean out 160. The champs there aren't exactly killers and its shallower than 154 or 168. It can be cleaned out much quicker than the alternatives

I've said before that Canelo needs to initiate with head movements, feints, jabs, and double jabs against Crawford. While Crawford can be outboxed, there was no slick boxing done because Canelo didn't initiate shit and was just waiting to throw hooks. You can't rattle a cerebral boxer by simply spamming hooks. Not only that, I've said before that the prideful Crawford thinks he's stronger than Canelo and will be eager to fight in the pocket at the right opportunity. Canelo was really risking to get KO'd in that fight. Now everybody thinks Crawford is all invincible and has successfully ducked the super welterweight division.

Canelo at 160 was fun too, some of those fights rank among his best performances or fights in general. He has his controversies and asterisks but he's been a massive net positive to the sport for a long while, that's why it makes me sad he was humiliation ritualed because he was too shot to provide any resistance. Until the Bivol loss he was about as close to an ideal champion as you could get with the names and activity and performances.

Can someone explain to me why nobody is suggesting the most obvious matchup ever?

Terence Crawford vs Olexander Usyk

Crawford goes up to Cruiserweight, Usyk comes back down.
Crawford had no trouble going up to super middleweight and becaming undisputed champion. Nobody else to fight in the division.
Usyk cleaned up heavyweight. The Parker fight is worthless because he has already beaten much better opponents. There is nothing left for him to do at heavyweight.

Both boxers 38 years old and nearing the end. Both undisputed champions across multiple weight divisions.

Fight of the century.

Where does Wilder’s power rank all time? I’m a super casual fan but I guess that basically the sentiment is that his technical boxing skills/movement are almost amateur level and the sole reason he ever made it this far is because of his generational knockout power. On top of that he started boxing in his early 20s and somehow made it to the top. How much of a genetic freak is he to have made it this far? Fury is a top level boxer and he almost had him beat twice. Could he have a chance against some all timers like Foreman, Frazier or Tyson?

And don't give me that bullshit that Canelo is past his prime when he's 3 years younger than Crawford and was way more active than him going into this fight, he had every possible advantage going for him into this fight (Vegas judging, mexican crowd, younger and more active, bigger and more adjusted to the weight, A-side, etc) and Crawford STILL fucking schooled him as the underdog. theres a sense of FOMO with Itauma vs. Usyk witht the promoters right now I think, Usyks got at max 2-3 fights left and they want Itauma to be one of them so if he wins they can promote him as the next star of heavyweight like they did with AJ after the klitschko fight and turn him into a cash cow
>if Itauma wins they will say Usyk was too old and past his best
Wlad was well past his best when AJ beat him and they were still able to sell him as the next best heavyweight after he won that fight, age doesnt really matter to fans that much as long as they dont look like theyre washed which usyk doesnt

I've reached the conclusion that De La Hoya was the one who built prime Canelo. It's not something that Canelo himself or his camp can reach on their own. Canelo has deep ego issues, and that's the main reason he doesn't want to be under De La Hoya. Canelo could have been undefeated if he had followed Oscar's advice, like when Oscar said he was too green to fight Floyd. He might even be facing more financial issues by leaving De La Hoya's supervision.

Extremely disigenuous to put the woman boxing there as if it was the main attraction and not the undercard for Tyson vs Paul.

Tyson vs Paul was a circus and theyre both far more popular figures than either Canelo and especially Crawford. Canelo vs Crawford is a fight that would only really attract boxing enthusiasts that understand the significance of two ATGs fighting for undisputed status. Canelo has a dedicated mexican fanbase, but Crawford isnt the most famous american active boxer, that would be either Ryan or Tank.

41 million viewers is a fantastic number.
Anonymous Brazil No.150831572 >>150833518

I mostly agree with you. Theres a ton of asterisks regarding Canelos undisputed status at 168 and now Crawford has inherited that. The Canelo that came in the division and tooks all those belts doesnt seem to be the Canelo Crawford fought. You really cant say Crawford is the best at 168 because the guy he took the belts from hasnt fought a credible contender in a good while.

Of course, were talking in the realm of a guy that started at 135 and went up and defeated a first ballot hall of famer, ATG 168. That alone is impressive and I will be the first to admit that i didnt give Crawfor much of a chance against Canelos power. Crawford is tough and wasnt scared, but Canelo was awfully predictable and low volume in his offense. Crawford is the kind of guy that can string together 6 punch combinations off a missed left hook. I dont think Canelo has EVER fought a guy that can do something similar besides Bivol, but even against Bivol Canelo looked less confused.

Canelo looked gunshy against Crawford in a way he didnt against Bivol. He tired to do a lot more in the Bivol fight. I think he honestely underestimated Crawford. He thought Crawford would buckle under a few good body shots but he didnt and he looked like he couldnt adapt. Very mid performance from Canelo.

Americans haven't done well in the past 10 years, the American talent pool at heavyweight is impoverished. And then there are no elite American cruiserweights. Plant was the only American at 168 and he lost to Canelo before the Crawford fight happened. Charlo held down 154 for a while but then got beat up by Canelo and faded into obscurity. Americans have also lost their dominance at middleweight and they're only prevalent at 147 and below when i check the boxrec pfp american rankings. It's sad. Vergil Ortiz is American but I don't he's better than Murtazaliev and Xander.

Crawford is actually the younger man, Canelo’s skin and muscles looked like cooked ham with all the inflammation he’s got from all the wars he’s been in. Crawford fighting much less and being in very few wars did him a lot of favours, he was the far fresher fighter. The Mexican style though more entertaining ages fighters faster. The buck style keeps fighters fresh so they can dance around to a decision.
Canelo’s also had multiple knee and hand surgeries.
He fought like it was an exhibition because he’s a family man now and he’s too soft and worn out.

USA has the most p4p talent both in overall total and relative to population size. You can count our mexican americans alone and we have 3 p4p level talents in Bam, Vergil, and Benavidez. That number grows the less specific you get, and that very specific chunk is more talent than what the UK and Mexico can muster in their entirety. You'll be lucky to get one tops in the next 5 years. Japan briefly got 3 guys onto the top 10 but they are above your league.

He hasn't fought a top contender for years my dude. After Bivol it was easy fights agaisnt dudes that weren't even near his level. He didnt fight benavidez. He also didnt fight Morrell, or Mbilli, or Diego Pacheco.

His approach to the Crawford fight was one of a guy too sure of his power and not much else. Of course Crawford was gonna try to outbox him, but Canelo fought him with barely any strategy whatsoever. This tells me Canelo underestimated Crawford and overestimated his own power.

Canelo has been semi retired since the Bivol fights. His fights have been more fanservice than actual challenges.

Of course, even though he wasnt undisputed at 160, beating Golovkin (which i dont belive he did, but it was close) is the same as. He beat the clear best guy in the division at the time.

Vergil isn't even a champ. He got Madrimov, but it was very competitive. Tank, Haney, Boots,Shakur and Teo have accomplished more.

Either way the US has a bunch of talent. This cope about not having heavyweights as if the best British heavyweights of this era haven't been thoroughly embarrassed by a much shorter Ukranian is pathetic. Having your big guys be fodder for Usyk is hardly something to brag about, but the UK is by all metrics a shadow of its former self and I really dont see it getting any better.
Anonymous United States No.150839746 >>150843398

Even if he lost GGG 2 it was still very close and highly competitive and he looked good in it. Fast, came in with a different strategy, dug deep and fought through adversity until the end. The Canelo of today couldn't even manage to make a good fight out of it and it has more to do with it than just Bud being an ATG talent and bad style matchup. Bud was beating him on the inside and Canelo looked like he was punching underwater.

>>150839615
I was just mentioning only the mexican americans, not that these were strictly our three best boxers though I am big on Vergil at 154. Teo is honduran and the rest aren't latino. That small chunk can outperform the total output of most countries atm, with all americans included no one is coming close.

That was in round 5, I don't think that one was out of frustration like the bivol one was, especially since he was probably up after 5, it felt more like he was trying to do it to establish that Crawford was much smaller and less powerful than him to the judges which consequently may have led to bud being much stronger in the clinch in round 6 which is the round where the fights momentum completely shifted in his favour
>>150839544
Pacheco and Mbilli really only became relevant as legit contenders in the last year or so, and even then based on their last few performances, their level doesn't even seem to be higher than that of someone like Mongia (who was also considered a top contender at 168 because of how weak the division is)

I'll grant you Mungia. That was a good win. I remember thinking Canelo was in a bit of trouble early on with his volume.

I guess im just disappointed in Canelos overall attitude of "ive done enough so I can just coast on by". I think its clear that after the Bivol loss he was less of a risk taker. He was talking about fighting Usyk before that.

But i will say, I watched the Dywer video and saw the compubox numbers, and even though it might be an unpopular take, I think the fight was much closer than what people, myself included, think. The first 6 rounds are all toss ups and I remember thinking Crawford was running from Canelo, even though he was landing some good shots, I remember thinking overall that Canelo looked much more dominant early on, with his body shots, which we all know hurt.

But crawford had a very good showing in the later rounds, and his counter combinations looked very impressive, but there were huge stretches of the fight that he just went on his bike and ran. He was like "ok I landed a good combo, I got the round, time.to disengage". I dont know, I think that being that negative should cost you the round. Its why I think Beterbiev won the first fight agaisnt Bivol. Bivol landed some good crisp shots but a lot of the fight he was just running from BB. Crawford granted wasnt as blatant but he was still running.

I dont know, I think theres some smoke and mirrors going on and I momentarily fell for it. Canelo was disappointed in his conditioning for the later part of the fight but I dont think he thought he was losing going into the second half.

Also Canelo should have fought Benavidez. I dont think hed lose. But since he had lost to Bivol he was afraid to take another risky right.

Yes the fight was closer than people think in terms of rounds at the very least. Crawford had all of the big moments later on but he didn't outperform Canelo by that wide of a degree like we've seen in other fights, and the earlier rounds were very close with Canelo's success being unrecognized by people. I remember having it 7-5 to crawford or 8-4 and that's exactly how the judges saw it, the rounds were fairly close even though Crawford was in total control by the end and the story of the fight belonged to him. Rounds aren't a true indicator of a fight's competitiveness in total and I think as boxing fans we forget that sometimes, and Crawford's success surprising people also leads to them overblowing his performance in the ring.

I stay up/wake up for the early ohashi/teiken cards and I've seen some of the regulars complain about certain scorecards for fights like Ioka and Tsutsumi that I saw coming from the judges both times. Bivol-Biev 1 I disagreed with though as well as other cards, but more often than people think there's reason to what the judges decide. Canelo Crawford was both not that close but also not really that one sided either and we'll see a bit more people coming around to those scorecards overtime (though not entirely because the flavor of Bud's schmeat is in season atm). Canelo has had stranger scorecards in the past than here.

Unfortunately for you boxing is scored on a ten point system round by round and Crawford literally won every round. The "close" rounds? He won those. Canelo looked visibily frustrated and impotent from round one.
If someone has it 12-0, 11-1, 10-2 its a legit score cuz Canelo was behind in every round of the fight and never did anything but chase him around and lunge in with single shots. Crawford beat him on the outside, on the inside, and in the middle. It was comprehensive, he won the majority of all exchanges at all distances.
7-5 is fucking cope. 8-4 is cope. He dominated more than Floyd did. Just because there's no knockdowns doesn't mean its close. Fight wasn't fucking close.

He dominated the fight so much that in spite of the judge's incompetence, they still got the outcome right. But to pretend that he won by two rounds. Don't bite the hands that feed you. Canelo was single handidily carrying the sport for a decade. If the judges don't give close rounds to the superstar it could kill the sport. Fans want dominant champions and dynasties. Ask the NBA how their ratings are now that they have no dynasties.
Anonymous United States No.150880140 >>150880194
shit on canelo all you want, but true warriors like him from the past 2 decade are exceedingly rare nowadays. i dont know what happened but all these new age boxers fight more on xitter than they do in the ring.

Canelo and Jon Jones fought a murderers row of fighters then later in their career they decided to duck one or two fighters and fans accuse them of being cowards who ducked everyone.

Fans are retards so props to Mayweather for not giving a shit what people thought and getting the most out of his career.

Ricky wouldn't back away from him when the ref told him so Mahomes gave him elbows. You aren't allowed to smother people, this is boxing not wrestling.

Ricky trained with Mayweather's father for one training camp and complained about overtraining. One taste of Mayweather's life was too much for him to handle. It makes you wonder what crazy shit Floyd Sr put his son through. Mayweather probably didn't know how crazy the training was since that's all he's ever known.

who's mahomes retard, the topic is mayweather getting preferential treatment in fights. He couldn't deal with Hatton's pressure so he shoved his forearm into his throat and the ref looked he other way? is that your claim sir?

can we also admit that we never really knew how good GGG was. his entire career was spent in the twilight of the dissolution of hbo and showtime where pbc emerged as the hugbox for bums which is also why crawford had to wait until 2023 to get a major fight.
GGG's resume is macklin, domnick guinn, marco antionio rubio, curtis stevens, lol, and then canelo at 36. can we stop pretendin this guy is marvin hagler cuz he fought the worst competition of any mw champion ever. its a joke

The GGG vs Canelo fights were uber annoying. Not sure the order but in the first fight GGG ran away the entire time and became a boring counterstriker. Then in the rematch it was Canelo who was backing away and trying to counterattack.

Yet despite all the cries that boxing is dying and corrupt and UFC is better, boxers get paid more than UFC fighters by orders of magnitude. UFC stars beg for a pay day in boxing before getting promptly knocked out by Jake Paul. We just had some of the biggest fights in boxing history with a new class of ATGs.

>In the NBA players get paid too much and act like divas.
Two parts, first there's very few players per team and second, they move a lot of merchandise, given that in addition to jerseys and caps they can also sell shoes which is unique and profitable in sport.
Player moves shoes and the team benefits as the total profile gets lifted.
And the NBA is thee black league so if they weren't allowed in on the money there'd be protests.

Boxing is the one true global sport and I'm okay with it being divided up and then having those champions face off on the big big cards.
If Ring had a Sport Center type thing to keep fans updated on global happenings in a coherent way that would basically change everything.
And that's probably what Dana understands, it's not so much the events but the media tracking as a whole that makes people feel connected.
We need better, engaging and interesting coverage of global boxing.
