It tells the players that next year the club isnt taking winning seriously and that grudged and spite are far more important than having the best pieces on the field.
It also sends a message to every other player that the club will not act in your best interests.

Contracts don't matter anymore. They're all about securing more value in the event a player wants to leave. For the Bombers what's the sense it keep a guy who doesn't want to be there for four years? Is him going through the motions for top dollar going to help the rebuild?
While there are some instances of disgruntled players being held until their contract expires it's almost always backfired and just ended up with the team getting less value than they would've. I a player wants to go, they generally get there and Bombers will never get more value for Ridley than they will now.
