Since they introduced the new format I have no more interest in the first phase of the CL, literally all the matches seem like filler until the first knockout round

and why were you interested in the old CL group stage when teams were qualified with 2 games to spare most of the time?

its bragging rights. are you saying you wouldnt like to see your team at the top of the league just for the epic memes?
Anonymous Egypt No.150870866 [Report]
the only way to make the group phase matter is to make the top 8 teams choose who they play

It was a classic group format. It doesn't have to be exciting, it's for weeding out the riffraff.
At least it had a proper home/away tie unlike this rigged shit.

it wasn't though, the european cup started in 1955 and the group phase started in 1992. no other competition has 4 teams playing each other home and away either.

as Bayern fan, I find this format much mor exciting.
In the old format, we would rape the other three opponents times and qualify with 18 points and then choke in the next rounds, because we face actually opposition there.
now we get at least 2-3 serious opponents and suspension for all 8 games trying to get into the top 8
Anonymous Netherlands No.150871912 [Report]
It should be straight knockouts with 64 clubs. I want to see Chelsea job to Macedonian olive farmers in the first round.
Anonymous United States No.150873975 [Report] >>150873985 >>150874102
should still be 32 teams
none go to europa league
play 4 teams home and away [one from each pot]
there i fixed it

Same. I don't watch CL at all now anymore, I only watch the final because it's free on tv.

>Before
You HAVE TO win 2 out of 3 matches to get out of group stages or else you have to luck out with goal difference other results etc. Dynamo Tractor can throw a spanner in the works ruining everything for FC Petrodollar.

>Now
You have to play 16 matches and just not end up at the absolute bottom. Zero upsets, all the big clubs go through even if they play subpar.

Modern football became so fucking lame so fucking fast. I think the football bubble is about to burst desu. Kids don't play or care about this sport. It's somehow getting more expensive all the time.

Just remove all the garbage and only have the big teams. Have the smaller teams compete for like 4 meme spots with 999999 qualification rounds to make sure they’re decent.

I don’t either desu, and yeah as others have said the groups were usually non-factors but dumb shit like Madrid losing to Sheriff was good fun and you had things like a big team finishing second and having to play another big team straight away, now it hardly matters since a team just needs to do well enough and they’ll get through

Kind of. Viewership is still very high here and you'll see the disgraceful imagery of people walking down the streets of Rio or Buenos Aires in Real Madrid or Man City shirts. But interest in the UCL tends to grow only in the knockout stage. South America is a bigger part of the problem than you'd think.

The last champions league was the in years.

With this format all matches are important and big teams cross paths more times.

In older mode always two teams trash all other and you know who is gonna win the champions league by first round.

Last year psg was eliminated and end up win it destroying eveybody.

Is ten times better now >>150870710

Part of me thinks it should be champions-only with straight knockouts from start to finish, which was basically what the pre-96/97 European Cup was. But then so many leagues are turning into one horse races and the sheer amount of money means you'd just see the same fixtures you do now anyway. I don't think there's any one good solution for European football.
