It was abolished because it gives the richest clubs another get-out-of-jail-free card. In situations where they would previously have lost on away goals, they now get to compete in a penalty shoot-out. It's the same reason that the new league system was brought on, as richer clubs have more chance of being sufficiently good enough to qualify over eight games than six.

you can field the youth team for half of the league phase and still qualify for the playoffs, at least in the group stages besides the sacrificial lamb first and second placed had to try more often than not.

this new league phase is kino, it just needs to be for top 16 only and not top 24
other than this uefa should really just limit how many teams from each country can join each cup to 2/3 max
i wish we could go back to champions only but that is long gone

the new format is good. With the elimination phase a bunch of expressive teams like juventus, milan, mancity and sporting got knocked out. Now teams have to play to win all 8 matches or risk getting an early leave
