I don't think people realize just how much risk was associated with Ryan Day's ascension. First of all, Meyer needed to have a QB with a major, game-altering deficiency (Barrett's downfield passing). Then, he needed contacts in the NFL to tell him "yeah there's this guy working with Chip Kelly in San Fran. The 49ers suck right now but that guy might be alright to help develop QBs" and that's Day's entry to the program. He THEN needed Day to have an aptitude for offensive playcalling rather than just being a position coach (this is ultimately what doomed Kerry Coombs's time as DC) to promote him. And finally he needed Day to show aptitude for leadership and managing a program, which COINCIDENTALLY the Zach Smith fiasco and subsequent suspension let Meyer know Day was the right guy.
