With how fast the ball comes at you there isn't enough time to make out where that ball is going to hit you and instincts come in and tell you to get the fuck out of the way. You can't risk taking a hit from a ball that could hit your head or your balls.

There is a rule that you have to make an effort, in the opinion of the home plate umpire, to get out of the way. If he feels that you intentionally allowed yourself to get hit, the way Ron Hunt used to do, he can deny you first base.
